Protection methods of manuscripts in museums and libraries

ABSTRACT Turkey is one of the richest country that has manuscript collections. But it is not paid enough care to the subjects of protection and exhibition of these monuments under suitable conditions. Beside it's artistic value, monuments containing too many important information by the view of history and culture, must be protected in most correct conditions in storage and exhibition environment and transferred to the future. In this workout; the subject is, the factors that damage the manuscripts in our museums and libraries and the precautions that can be taken against them. Besides the enviromental factors that damage the monuments, the problems caused by the monument's itself are also discussed. To remove these problems and to minimize the corruption of the monuments, appropriate heat, moisture, luminary conditions, and the precautions that can be taken against biological activities and natural disasters, the selection of storage and exhibition equipments are discussed briefly. Furthermore, by also giving a general restoration knowledge with alternative protection techniques, that arise according to technological developments, it is tried to be created basic protection principles for museums and libraries.
