A leap against the function of writing: Asemic writing

Humanity has stepped into a new age with the invention of the writing. Although writing has been invented as a method to document and to transfer information, the evolution it has been through has caused writing to receive various transformations and finally, it has found a new direction to express itself, directly in contrast to its original function. The act of producing unreadable text is done by many cultures for centuries and it is a way of communicating messages, but we see the word "Asemic" being used as a term for the first time during the beginning of the 21st century. Within the scope of this research, this form of script, which is similar to writing and is left for the interpretation of the viewer, will be examined by looking into how it has gotten affected by movements like Futurism, Dadaism, Constructivism, Lettrism, and also by the effects of calligraphic traditions of various cultures. In relation to this, the function and history of writing will also be discussed, in order to better understand the purpose of the Asemic writing.
