Özet (EN)
The aim of this research is to examine the contribution of teaching activities prepared according to the 5E learning cycle model to the recognition, building and construction of the polygon concept of 7th grade students. The research was conducted with the 7th grade students at a public secondary school in the academic year of 2017-2018. The research is qualitative research and case study used as a research method. Van Hiele Geometric Levels Determination Test was applied to determine the focus group students before the application. The research was carried out with activities prepared according to the 5E learning cycle model. During the application, individual interviews were conducted with the focus group students at the end of each session, and abstraction processes were handled according to the RBC model. Research data were analyzed with descriptive analysis technique. In the research findings, it was observed that the students were not able to recognize the polygon and the non-polygon at the beginning, while the students realized RBC abstraction skills related to the polygon during the application process. At the end of the study, it was observed that the focus group students were able to recognize the polygon, building with its features and construct the hierarchical structure of the quadrilaterals. In addition, an increase was observed in the frequency of RBC actions performed by students during the research process. It was determined that the students participating in the research were happy with the activities designed according to the 5E learning cycle model and they developed a positive attitude towards the Mathematics course.
