The reflection of cultural domination on screen through food: An analysis of cinema and TV series content

In this study, I discuss how food is contextualized in cinematic narratives and television series, depicting the cultural domination established and sustained through certain foods and the symbolic violence within these power dynamics. While I discuss all kinds of cultural pressures and pressure patterns that are maintained by the society about the way food is consumed or about that food itself, which the society establishes against the individual, and therefore the individual against another individual, through food, I aim to reveal how all these patterns are unconsciously digested and maintained. The main issue I problematize in this study is to underline and raise awareness of the idea of cultural domination implemented and maintained through food. I believe that examining and questioning the existence of recognized stereotypes can reduce the symbolic violence on gender, race and cultural differences within the symptoms of cultural violence perpetrated through food. The most basic idea I would like to emphasize in the summary of the study is that food is not just a consumption area; it is a communication system and a set of images In a cultural sense, food can become a tool. It is used as a medium of domination for societies regarding social status, gender and ethnic identity.
