The development of the portrait genre in new Turkish literature

New Turkish Literature is a period that began with the Tanzimat Edict in 1839 and started to change in many areas. During this period, new literary genres entered the Turkish literature due to the influence of Western literature and many existing species began to change. One of the changing species is literary portrait. In particular with the help of literary portraits, important people in the community have been considered and studied. It has been in Western literature that the portrait which we encountered in many important works from past to present as a literary genre. The portrait began to exist in Turkish literature as an independent genre with the Republic Period. As a result of the investigations made in literature, there are no studies that provide light to the field about portraits as a literary genre in Turkish literature. In this study, which was made to contribute to the literature, the development process of the portrait from the past to the present has been examined. For this research, eighty one books which are thought to have discussed the physical or mental portraits of multiple writers have been examined. Literary portraits in these books are exemplified and these books are grouped into specific classes. The aim of this study is to provide benefits to researchers in this field.
