Abstract (EN)

Community Centers, which is one of the most important cultural improvements of the Turkish Republic, were established in 19th of February, 1932 by Atatürk. The aim of the Community Centers was to introduce Atatürk's principles and revolutions to the people, make these people adopt to these principles and revolutions, and improve these principles and revolutions. Community Centers tried to provide cultural development by using nine different branches. Thus, they ensured the consolidation between the people and the state, and aimed to extend the revolutions to the social base. Urfa Community Center is one of the Community Centers that were established in 23rd of February, 1934. Urfa Community Center and its activities form this survey. This survey is the first documented and scientific research about Urfa Community Center. It is thought that this survey will play an important role in clarifying the years of Urfa between 1934 and 1951. Literature and archive research was done, national and local publications were scanned, and works about Community Centers were studied as a method. Urfa Community Center adopted republican ideology, and took some important steps on track of cultural development. National culture was compiled contemporarily and represented in fine arts works. While national and contemporary awarenes was being created by representations and conferences, an important revival in social domain was also provided. While physical training for the youth was being provided by sport activities, the national history awareness was created by national holidays. Furthermore, the educational level of the people was enhanced by literary courses, and a great deal of effort was made for making women participate to the social life. Thus, the aim of Urfa Community Center became largely effective, and made a significant contribution to cultural development policy.
