Infecti̇on control in newborn intensi̇ve care units

Introduction and objective: Hospital staff should be trained on hospital infection and its symptoms, importance, side effects, consequences, precautions, ways of transmission of microorganisms, and ways of protection of personnel. The aim of this study is to determine the problems in neonatal intensive care units, medical care applications, infection control measures, to provide training about the necessary measures and to investigate the effect of training on these applications. Material method: The study was applied to 30 nurses and 9 nursing assistants working in Aydın Adnan Menderes University Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Hand hygiene observation and unit inspection were carried out to evaluate the unit's medical care practices. Unit nurses and cleaning staff were given training about infection control measures. The training was conducted with a PowerPoint presentation containing 104 slides. Observations and inspections were repeated three times as pre-training, 1st month and 3rd month after training. Research data were evaluated using SPSS (Statistical for the Social Sciences) 21.0 statistical program. Results: In the study, the rate of nurses ensuring hand hygiene before aseptic procedures was determined as 53% before training, 83% in the 1st month after training, and 80% in the 3rd month after training. Hand hygiene ensuring rate after risk of body fluids contamination was determined as 56% before training, 80% in the 1st month after training, and 96% in the 3rd month after training. Hand hygiene ensuring rate after contact with patient's surrounding was determined as 40% before training, 83% in the 1st month after training, and 80% in the 3rd month after training. The findings showed an increase in proper medical care practices after training. It was determined that awareness of infection control measures was provided with training and proper medical care practices were increased with inspections. Conclusion: In our study, it was seen that the inspections made to detect wrong and correct practices and to create awareness are also important. For this reason, the importance of continuous inspections along with trainings and sharing the results with the staff was understood. Training should be done for identifying and correcting mistakes, ensuring the continuity of corrects. In our study, it has been observed that education and inspections with effective communication increase infection control measures.
