The effects of mother voice and father voice listened to newborns during heel blood collection on pain level and physiological parameters: A randomized controlled study

The study was conducted as a randomized controlled type experimental study to determine the effect of maternal and paternal voices listened to on newborns during heel blood collection, on pain level and physiological parameters. The research was carried out in Düzce Atatürk State Hospital Gynecology Service between December 2021 and March 2022. The sample of the study consisted of 90 newborns (mother voice group=30, father voice group=30, control group=30) who agreed to participate in the study as a result of the power analysis and met the sample selection criteria. The distribution of newborns according to groups was made randomly. The newborns in the intervention group were listened to the mother's voice and the father's voice during the procedure, while the newborns in the control group only received routine heel blood sampling. As a result of these applications, the physiological parameters and pain of newborns were evaluated. In data collection, "Personal Information Form" to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of parents and newborns, "NIPS Pain Scale" (Neonatal Infant Pain Scale-NIPS) to measure the level of pain before, during and after the procedure, to evaluate the physiological findings "Newborn Baby Pain/Physical Parameter Evaluation Form" was used. The data obtained in the research were analyzed by transferring them to the IBM SPSS Statistics 26 package program. When the pain results of the newborn are evaluated; It was determined that the mean NIPS score in the mother's voice group during and after the procedure was significantly lower than the other groups (p<0.05). When the physiological parameter results are evaluated; While the mean oxygen saturation values of the newborns in the mother's voice group were found to be significantly higher during and after the procedure compared to the father's voice and control groups, the mean peak heart rate was found to be significantly lower than the father's voice and control groups (p<0.05). As a result; It has been observed that the most effective method in relieving the pain of the newborn during the heel blood collection procedure is the mother's voice. According to the results of the research; It is recommended to use the mother's voice method as a non-pharmacological method in relieving the pain of the newborn and positive physiological parameters.
