Structural transformation in relocated settlements: Architectural changes in the process of modernization

Relocating settlements typically consist of communities forced to move from their current locations due to external factors such as natural disasters, wars, or large-scale development projects. This research is based on understanding the physical, social, and cultural dynamics of relocation processes and their impact on local architecture and settlement patterns. In this context, the study examines the architectural transformations influenced by modernization in the relocation processes of Taşlık and Dereçaylı villages in Tokat province. The aim of the research is to investigate the long-term effects of landslides, floods, and other natural disasters on the spatial arrangements and planning of these villages, and to evaluate the social, economic, and cultural implications of these effects. This study analyzes how local architectural structures adapt to changing environmental conditions and how this adaptation process transforms the lifestyles and traditional practices of local communities. A case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used as the research methodology. In this context, semi-structured interviews, unstructured observations, and document analysis methods were employed as data collection tools. The obtained data were analyzed using content analysis. The research findings show that the relocation processes have led to significant transformations in local architecture and settlement patterns under the influence of modernization. In particular, the transition from traditional materials to modern construction materials allows for the construction of more durable and long-lasting structures. Additionally, the development of infrastructure and services enhances the quality of life for residents in rural areas. In conclusion, the modernization process in relocating settlements presents both opportunities and challenges, necessitating comprehensive management strategies to protect and improve community well-being. This research emphasizes that the planning and management of relocating settlements should balance economic, technological, social, and environmental sustainability factors.
