Problems of local media and attitudes of its workers: Denizli field survey

Contributing to socialization and democratization as a function, local media has increasingly been the subject of research in all society levels and in scientific environments. Yet, it has always struggled against a number of problems since it came to exist. Media, as an indispensible part for democracies, has an important mission in revealing the local issues and problems, attracting the attention of local authorities with its news and remarks in columns and in contributing to participatory democracy by building bridges between local people and local authorities. Thus, identifying the problems of local media and offering solutions to these problems have naturally the utmost importance. The subject of this study is the concept of local media, development, features and problems of local media in Denizli together with local media throughout the country, Turkey, and attitudes of workers of local media towards these issues. Although there has been an increase in the number of studies conducted on local media concept and its problems in Turkey, there are not enough number of studies dealing with the problems of local media and the regions or cities where local media establishments are situated in. This study focuses on socio-demographic profiles of local media workers in Denizli and their attitudes towards their profession and the problems in their profession together with the features and the problems of local media establishments. Structured questionnaire was used by the researcher to collect data from the actively working participants in media sector; the results were investigated by frequency analysis and analyzed using SPSS Statistical Package Programme.
