Local administrators' approach to bicycle transportation: the case of Konya

The bicycle, which is one of the best alternatives in urban transportation, is gaining importance and it's part of the system. However, the use of bicycles cannot reach the desired level. Activities such as infrastructure investments, social activities, etc. are insufficient to show the desired increase in bicycle usage. The fact that these activities do move away from the fragmentary image and do not present a holistic landscape throughout the city is, of course, closely related to implementation as well as planning. The prevalence of traditional bicycle use in Konya is given that since 2001 the special emphasis on cycling in transportation master plans is given, the planer and the user group separately for the holistic solution to the urban bicycle transportation the need to examine the approach of the practitioner/decision-making audience has shown itself. From here, the local managers who have an active role in the planning and management of the urban transport system have been tried to study the perspective of bicycle transportation. In the study, in the framework of the findings obtained after the literature research, the importance and point of view given to the bicycle transportation of local managers, the effects of bicycle use and the development of bicycle transportation are determined tried. The work has been embodied in the city of Konya for its potentials due to the transportation of bicycles. The population of the study consisted of a total of 115 people including the general secretary and vice of Konya Metropolitan Municipality, heads of departments, council members, Karatay-Selçuklu-Meram municipal councilors and a survey was conducted with these people. In the conclusion part of the study, the data obtained from the questionnaires were evaluated and suggestions were made to improve bicycle transportation.
