Installation art and site-specific installation art: An examination on the artist's definition of place-space

Important changes have occurred in the relationship between art, artists, artworks, and audiences due to industrialization. These changes, along with the innovations brought about by contemporary art, have made it possible for art pieces to directly interact with the audience. This has led to the development of installation art and the blurring of the line between art and design, thereby reshaping the definition of artwork and space. Artists have questioned the concept of place-space and presented different perspectives on this issue while producing installation works. In this context, This study focuses on artists' approaches to the idea of place-space and their methods in the production processes of artworks, aiming to define the qualities of installation art and the concept of place-space. The views of the artists were focused on within the scope of this study. The qualitative characteristics of installation art and the concept of space and place-space are discussed and defined within the scope of "the artist's idea of place-space". The scope of the research was limited to artists who had at least one exhibited site-specific work. Qualitative research methods were preferred in this study and semi-structured questions were asked to the purposive sample group determined by in-depth interview method, and the data obtained were analyzed by qualitative analysis methods such as discourse analysis and descriptive analysis. In the results obtained from the research and findings, an up-to-date and detailed definition of installation art was obtained, a new definition of place-space was put forward by the artist's idea of place-space, and the interaction of installation work with place-space was detailed.
