Investigation of LCORL gene polymorphisms in domestic sheep breeds

Abstract (EN)

When evaluating a farm animal, body size is one of the most visible and one of the factors that will most affect meat yield. Body size in sheep is a trait that is thought to be controlled by many gene regions and varies between breeds. LCORL gene region is one of the gene regions that has been found to be associated with both human height and height of various farm animals. Previous studies have shown that the LCORL gene region can also be associated with height in sheep. In this study, polymorphisms of the LCORL gene region in 170 animals belonging to six different domestic sheep breeds were investigated by RFLP-PCR method. For the LCORL-1 gene region of the studied population; Heterozygosity rate was zero in Karayaka breed and higher heterozygosity rate was observed in Morkaraman breed compared to other breeds. It was determined that the heterozygosity rates of Pırlak, Sakız, Akkaraman and Kıvırcık breeds were close to each other and at very low levels. In the gene region determined as LCORL-2, the sought SNP was never found and it was observed that the population was not polymorphic in terms of this SNP.
