The economic opportunities and constraints of green growth: The applicability of South Korea's growth strategy to Turkey

In recent years, many countries have turned to sustainable economic policies in order to combat increasing environmental problems and climate change. The green growth approach is becoming increasingly popular in policies to combat environmental problems. South Korea stands out as a model for developing countries such as Türkiye with its green growth strategies. The aim of this study is to provide the necessary academic contribution to researching the applicability of a green growth-based economic programme in Türkiye by examining South Korea's growth strategy. A qualitative research method was used in the study. Statistical data obtained from primary sources were examined using descriptive and comparative analysis methods, and the findings were interpreted to seek answers to the research questions. The study discusses the opportunities and constraints that green growth will provide for the Turkish economy, compares the economic, ecological and social indicators of Türkiye and South Korea, and presents the successful and unsuccessful outcomes of the South Korean model. Findings from the analysis of the results of South Korea's Green Growth Strategy indicate that South Korea has been successful in the economic dimension of sustainable development, partially successful in environmental sustainability, and unsuccessful in the social dimension. Therefore, considering the successful and unsuccessful outcomes of South Korea's experience, Türkiye's green growth model should be designed according to its own conditions and needs. The policies to be followed should focus on economic growth and environmental sustainability, as well as on eliminating inequalities in society and ensuring income justice. Türkiye's unique green growth model should be prepared, internalised and proactively implemented without neglecting any factor of sustainable development.
