Examining green products and ecological certifications in terms of environmental sustainability

The increasing number of environmental problems and the rapid depletion of natural resources have made it necessary to reduce environmental impacts in production processes. In particular, industrialization and rapid consumption habits cause many environmental problems such as air, water and soil pollution. In order to prevent these negative effects, environmentally friendly approaches are adopted in production and consumption models. In this context, green products are defined as products that minimize environmental impacts, are based on sustainable resource use, and observe the principles of energy efficiency and waste management in production processes. The production of green products is based on criteria such as using natural resources effectively and efficiently, saving energy, minimizing waste, encouraging recycling and limiting the use of toxic chemicals. These products aim to reduce their negative effects on the environment throughout their life cycle and are developed with an understanding of environmental responsibility both at the production stage and during use and disposal processes. Ecological certification systems are used to document the environmental performance of green products and provide reliable information to consumers. By certifying that products comply with established environmental standards, these certifications both guide manufacturers to improve their environmental management practices and allow consumers to make informed choices. Thus, ecological certifications contribute to the spread of environmentally friendly production and consumption habits by ensuring that green products are recognized and preferred in the market. This study focuses on the properties of green products and their environmental effects in production processes through the literature review method. Additionally, different types and application areas of ecological certification systems were examined in detail. It was emphasized that certifications guide producers in their environmental management processes and offer consumers the opportunity to make informed choices. In the research, ecological certification examples that are widely used in Turkey and around the world were discussed, and the function of certificates in increasing environmental awareness was discussed. While reducing environmental impacts and optimizing resource use in the production of green products is ensured, it has been stated that consumers make environmentally friendly choices through ecological certificates.
