Abstract (EN)

This thesis aims to reveal the effects of land-use change on the socio-economic structure in the Yeşilırmak and Kızılırmak basins. The study examines long-term population developments, changes in education and income levels, and the demographic characteristics of rural households. Using CORINE land-cover data, changes in the use of agricultural, forest, urban, and industrial areas were identified, and, through surveys, local perceptions, migration tendencies, and the socio-economic implications of these changes were evaluated. The findings indicate that agricultural and forest areas have shrunk and become fragmented in the basins, while unplanned urbanization and industrial activities have increased. It was determined that rural households engage in small-scale production and, due to limited income sources and economic instability, display high migration tendencies. While degradation in forest areas and the non-agricultural use of farmland weaken ecosystem services, dam and infrastructure investments have generated both benefits and ecological losses. In conclusion, land-use changes directly affect the socio-economic structure in the basins. Therefore, developing sustainable management strategies, conserving agricultural and forest lands, and ensuring the participation of local people in decision-making processes are of critical importance.
