In this study, it was aimed to estimate the nutritional status of adult individuals and determine the relationship between nutritional status and dietary inflammatory index (DII) . In the study, 119 adult women who applied to the Private Middle East Hospital Internal Medicine Policlinic were included between February and September 2017. Socio-demographic characteristics, physical activity status and eating habits of the individuals were recorded in the questionnaire form. Individuals' anthropometric measurements, some biochemical parameters, and three-day nutritional records were assessed. The dietary inflammatory index scoring system was developed by the studies that analyzed the effects of the diet on inflammatory markers. The scoring was done positive if the food item enhanced inflammation effect (pro-inflammatory), whereas it was scored negative in case inflammation effect was reduced (anti-inflammatory). In this study, the dietary inflammatory indexes were calculated by using the three-day food consumption records of the individuals. In addition to these, the Beck depression scale was applied. The mean age of the participants in this study was determined as 36.2±10.22 years. According to the body mass index (BMI) classification, 36.1% of the individuals were found to be overweight (BMI 24.9-29.9 kg/m2) and 49.6% obese (BMI≥30 kg/m2). Individuals DII values in the study were assessed by division of quartiles. Individuals' dietary inflammatory index limit values range from -3.32 to 4.74. The mean value of DII was determined as 0.18±1.73. There was no significant difference between C-reactive protein and other biochemical parameters of individuals according to dietary inflammatory index quartiles (p> 0.05). It was found that there was a negative correlation between individuals' age and DII (p <0.05). Anthropometric measurements, basal metabolic rate, total energy expenditure and physical activity level were not significantly different in quartiles (p> 0.05). Dietary protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), omega-3 and fiber intake of individuals with low DII were found to be significantly higher than the others (p <0.05). Dietary A, E, B6, C vitamins and folate, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin intake of individuals with high DII were found to be significantly lower in subjects than those with low DII (p <0.05). In addition, magnesium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron intake of the subjects were found to be significantly higher in individuals with low DII (p <0.05). There was no significant difference between DII quartiles and consumption of green tea, black tea and coffee, the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), depression status, and sleep duration of individuals (p>0.05). In conclusion, it has been shown that dietary contents of adult individuals affect the dietary inflammatory index. Reducing the inflammatory burden of the diet of individuals by considering adequate amounts of energy, macro and micro-nutrients and anti-inflammatory nutrients intake may help to prevent chronic diseases such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes (Type 2 DM), cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
