The relationship between early maladaptive schemas, attachment styles in romantic relationships, relationship satisfaction and coping styles in adult individuals

Abstract (EN)

Early maladaptive schemas occur in childhood or adolescence, disrupt the functionality of the individual to a certain extent and occur as a result of negative experiences encountered in the early period of life. According to the Attachment Theory, attachment is defined as the emotional bond developed by the infant and primary caregiver in infancy. Different attachment styles occur depending on whether the primary caregiver can or cannot meet the needs of the baby. Relationship satisfaction was defined as meeting the needs mutually in the relationship, and the presence of positive feelings in the relationship. There are 3 different ways of coping styles for individuals to deal with early maladaptive schemas: overcompensation, surrender and avoidance. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between early maladaptive schemas, attachment styles in romantic relationships, relationship satisfaction and coping styles in adult individuals. The research consists of a random selection of 460 individuals aged 18 and over, 356 females and 104 males. Sociodemographic information form, Young Schema Scale Short Form (YSQ-SF3), Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory II, Relationship Satisfaction Scale, Young Compensation Scale (YCI) and Young Rygh Avoidance Scale (YRAI) were administered to the participants by the researcher. Data obtained from the scales applied to the participants were analyzed using the SPSS-22 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) statistical package program. The analyzes used were Pearson Correlation analysis, multidirectional regression analysis, Independent Groups T Test, One-Way ANOVA analysis and MAVOVA analysis. According to the analysis, relationship satisfaction has a negative relationship with early maladaptive schemes and coping styles, while it has a positive relationship with avoidance attachment style and has a negative relationship with anxious attachment style. Age group, relationship status, relationship duration, early maladaptive schemas, coping styles and attachment styles have significant effects on relationship satisfaction. There is no significant difference was found between relationship satisfaction and gender, place of residence, education level. However, significant differences were found between relationship satisfaction and age group, relationship status and relationship duration. Significant differences were found between early maladaptive schemes and gender, age group, educational status, relationship status and relationship duration. However, no significant difference was found between the early maladaptive schemas and the place of residence variable. Significant differences were found between coping styles and gender, age group, educational status, relationship status and relationship duration. However, no significant difference was found between coping styles and the variable of place of residence. While there were no significant differences between attachment styles and gender, age group, place of residence, and education status, significant differences were found between relationship status and relationship duration.
