The effect of web-based training for the prevention of urinary tract infections in adult kidney transplant recipients on clinical outcomes

Abstract (EN)
Objective: To evaluate the impact of web-based training for the prevention of urinary tract infections on clinical outcomes in adult kidney transplant recipients. Method: The research consisted of two phases: methodological and single-blind randomized controlled trials. It is registered in Clinical Trials (ID: NCT05821946). The first phase involved the development of a website following the ethics committee approval and institutional permissions. In the second phase, the effectiveness of the practice was evaluated using the Patient Description Form, Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale, Post-Discharge Clinical Outcomes Data Form and Satisfaction VAS between April and December 2023 in 52 kidney transplantation patients at Akdeniz University Hospital. Patients in the intervention group were referred to the web-based comprehensive health training developed to prevent urinary tract infections, while those in the active control group were referred to the organ transplantation center website, where the organ transplantation handbook was available. Patients were monitored via text message three days a week. The clinical outcomes of the patients in the intervention and active control groups were monitored for six months with three follow-up visits (1-30- T1; 31-90-T2; 91-180-T3 days after discharge). Data were evaluated through descriptive analyses and chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, Friedman test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, t-test, per-protocol, and intention-to-treat analyses. Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of the intervention group receiving web-based training and the active control group in terms of development of infection (p>0.05), number of emergency visits (p>0.05) and hospital readmissions (p>0.05). However, the significant difference was determined between their satisfaction measured (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that the training, which was developed to prevent urinary tract infections and was presented into three different options: written-visual, podcast and video, and divided the longest of which was four minutes into sections, significantly increased satisfaction.
