Abstract (EN)
The aim of the thesis is to determine the relationship between dietary status and oral and dental health in adults. To show the relationship between caries formation, gingival diseases, tooth erosion and other oral and dental health diseases and nutrition. A total of 140 participants, 102 females and 38 males, aged 18-64 years with an average age of 38.94 years, who came to a private dental clinic in Istanbul, participated in the study by face-to-face questionnaire method. Participants' general information including gender, age, water consumption, number of meals, chewing time and educational status and anthropometric information including height, weight, waist circumference, waistto-height ratio, fat ratio, muscle ratio and body mass index (BMI) were obtained. The Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT-26) and Oral Health Impact Scale (OHIP-14) were included in the study. Daily macronutrient and micronutrient intakes were calculated with 24-hour food consumption records. Within the scope of this study, the mean waist-to-height ratio of women was 0.49 and BMI value was 24.77 kg/m2 , while the mean waist-to-height ratio of men was 0.53 and BMI value was 27.95 kg/m2 , which were within the values of risky and slightly obese. OHIP-14 and YTT-26 total score were found to be higher in female participants than male participants and it was concluded that OHIP-14 scores decreased and YTT26 eating restriction factor increased as the educational level increased in all participants. When the reference values and nutrient intakes were compared, it was observed that the participants had high protein and low vitamin E values. In all participants, calcium, B12, zinc, magnesium deficiency was associated with increased OHIP-14 scores, while vitamin C intake was associated with high OHIP-14 scores in men. The increase in OHIP-14 scores with the increase in the YTT-26 eating restrictive factor shows the relationship between eating behaviour and oral dental health. In this thesis study, the importance of the relationship between eating attitude, nutrient deficiency or high intake and oral and dental health was emphasised and it was concluded that clinical studies with the cooperation of dietician dentist may be more effective.
