Adolescent problems and coping behaviours of adolescents who live in orphanage

ABSTRACTThis descriptive study was done to determine the adolescence problems and coping methodsof adolescents who live in orphanages. The sample of the study composed of 87 adolescentboys and girls between 12-19 ages who live in zzet Baysal Foundation Rest Home and Girl?sOrphanage and Boy?s Orphanage in Düzce City Center which are under the authority ofSocial Services and Child Protection Association. The data of the study was collected byStudent Information Form which was developed by the researcher, Adolescence ProblemsScanning List and The Scale Of Coping with the problems in adolescence. The questionnaireswere filled in under researcher?s observation. The data obtained from the study was assessedin a statistical program. Persentage, mean, standart deviation, t test, one way ANOVA,Kruskal-Wallis, Scheffe test, Mann-Whitney U test and correlation were used to analyse thedata. According to the results of the study the most problematic field has been experienced bythe orphanage adolescents is thoughts and demands about future and the most used methodsare self developing, emotional relaxation and not to take the problem serious/making jokes.Making friends with the opposite gender and learning sexual problems are more seen in boysand psychological development problems is more in academically insufficient group. Usingdrugs as a coping method is more seen in these groups: boys, the ones who don?t attendschool, who lost their parents, who smokes, boys show their negative feelings more than girls.The difference between groups is statistically significant (p<0.05). There is a possitivesignificant relation between adolescence problem fields (p<0.05). The more psychologicdevelopment problems, we found the more negative emotional reactions; the more thoughtsand demands about future, we found the more not taking problems serious/making jokes andemotional relaxation. The adolescents in orphanage want to learn diseases and differences inadolescence from nurses. With direction of our results, were suggest, that adolescence inorphanage should be observed regularly, they should be given consultants for solving theirproblems and they should be strengthened for coping behaviors.Keywords: Adolescence, Orphanages, Coping Behaviours.
