Administrators' and teachers' views on the basic skills that students should have in the 21st century

In the context of the social development process, transition from industrial society to information society in terms of human behavior, major concepts and changes is quite innovative. Amongst all these innovations and developments, especially technological developments, rapid changes in schooling and compulsory education can be regarded as the most important changes. In the 21st Century, new information and communication technologies are constantly being developed, people are working on new energy sources, many important developments are taking place in the medical field and new discoveries are made at the bottom of the ocean as well as the depths of space.While all these developments are taking place, all the individuals within the community are expected to contribute to bring the world into a more livable place. In this respect, in the 21st century, past educational approaches from previous years are abandoned and more active, more participatory approach to education is preferred that may attracts students in the educational process. Only in this way, individuals who can generate knowledge, convert generated knowledge into technology, take advantage of advanced technologies in production and distribution of goods and services needed by the community, take an active role in cooperation and teamwork, take the initiative, think, who is creative, investigative and flexible and who is good at oral and written communication skills and problem solving can be educated. Changes in the understanding of education also affect the skills that students should have and it is important to train individuals who have knowledge in different areas and a vision about different disciplines.In this particular study 21st century education conception has been reviewed and through the example of Istanbul province, teachers? and administrators? views on skills that students should have, have been investigated. At the same time, by paying attention the distinction between private and public schools the difference between teachers and administrators who work in both types of schools has been tested.In conclusion, in this study it is found that teachers and administrators who work in both types of schools have different views on skills that students should have. According to the results, in terms of school population, branches and gender variables, teachers and administrators both working in public and private schools differ in their views on skills that students should have.
