Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT Title: Investigation of the relationship between environmental stressors perceived by patients in the intensive care unit and anxiety status and sleep quality Objective: The research is a type of descriptive research planned to evaluate the relationship between environmental stressors perceived by patients in the intensive care unit and anxiety status and sleep quality. Materials and Methods: The research was conducted with 200 patients between 28.02.2022 and 20.11.2022 in the second and third stage intensive care units (internal medicine, coronary, anesthesia, thoracic intensive care) at Eskişehir Osmangazi University Health Application and Research Hospital. "Patient Introduction Form", "Intensive Care Unit Environmental Stressors Scale (ICUESS)", "Pittsburg Sleep Quality Indeks (PSQI)", "Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S)" were used to collect the data. Independent Sample-t test, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H, Bonferroni correction, Spearman correlation coefficient, Binary Logistic Regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Results: In the study, the average age of the patients was 62,18±13,98, 61,52% were male and 38,5% were female. The mean score of the ICUESS was 72,72±12,67 and the mean score of the STAI-S was 43,95±6,05. The mean score of PSQI is 6,91±3,12, patients have poor sleep quality on average. There is a positive, weak and statistically significant relationship between PSQI scores with ICUESS and STAI-S scores (p<0,001). There is a positive, weak and statistically significant relationship between ICUESS and STAI-S scores (p<0,001). In the logistic regression analysis, 1-unit increase in ICUESS scores increases the risk of poor sleep quality by 5% and 1-unit increase in STAI-S scores increases the risk of poor sleep quality by 9.3%. Conclusion: The patients' exposure to environmental stressors and anxiety level are close to the medium level. When the level of perceived environmental stressors increases in intensive care, the level of situational anxiety also increases. When the level of perceived environmental stressor and state anxiety increases, sleep quality worsens.
