The evaluation of the effect of care package application on urinary catheter-related infection and incontinence of female patients in intensive care unit

SUMMARY THE EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF CARE PACKAGE APPLICATION ON URINARY CATHETER-RELATED INFECTION AND INCONTINENCE OF FEMALE PATIENTS IN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT INTRODUCTİON AND OBJECTİVE: The purpose of this study is to explore and describe the effects of Urinary Infections and Incontinence Prevention Care Package application on the frequency of Urinary Incontinence and UTI of female patients in intensive care unit. MATERİAL AND METHOD: In this study, experimental design type was used. The study was performed on 52 female patients in the coronary intensive care unit and adult intensive care unit of Gebze Fatih Public Hospital between January 2020-February. "Patient Diagnosis Form", "Patient Follow-up Form", "Overactive Bladder Inquiry Form On The Day of Discharge" and "Overactive Bladder Inquiry Form of The First Month After Discharge'' were applied to the study and control groups. "Urinary Infections and Incontinence Prevention Care Package" was solely applied to the individuals in the study group. The Care Package was prepared after the process of completion of control group and it was applied to the individuals working in the clinic after they all had been trained. FİNDİNGS: The incidence of urinary tract infection symptoms after catheterization was significantly higher in the study group (42.3%) while compared to the control group (15.4%) (p<0.05). When the urine culture was examined in terms of reproduction, it was found that 19.2% of the study group and 26.9% of the control group had reproduction. In spite of the fact that there were signs of urinary system infection in the study group, no any significant relationship was found in urine culture reproduction results (p<0.05). This situation made us think that urinary tract infection and COVID-19 symptoms may be confused with each other due to their similarities because of the break out of the COVID-19 pandemic while our research was continuing. While there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of the mean of the OAB-V8 form applied on the first day of the discharge and first month after discharge, the mean of the study group (10.12) was lower than that of the control group (11). CONCLUSİON: In this study, incontinence and urinary system infection were examined by applying the care package and no significant results were found. However, since it is the first study on this subject, further studies are needed. Key words: Care Package, Catheterization, Intensive Care Patient, Nursing Care.
