Social exclusion experiences of women in the context of poverty

Poverty that all societies strive to eradicate today, is a significant phenomenon that brings along the spiral of different social problems. Undoubtedly, women are among the most affected groups by the risks of poverty. Given the broad scope of social exclusion and its dimensions that are an integral part of poverty, an in-depth understanding of the social exclusion dynamics that women are exposed to for various reasons, provides an important area of study in order to shed light on the many social problems that women experience on the basis of poverty system. In this study, it is aimed to find out the social exclusion experiences of women who try to survive in the poverty system, and sub-objectives are determined accordingly. On the basis of the interpretive paradigm, the methodology of the research was formed by using phenomenologic design with qualitative research method. By taking Mamak Zirvekent sample from the Ankara universe, an in-depth interview was conducted with 10 women who live in the poverty system. Then, the responses of the women to the semi-structured interview form are codified in sub-themes. In the transition from the slums, which are fed by the rotation of poverty among people, to the new sheltering areas (TOKİ, etc.), built for the poor and emerged with new urban poverty, the exclusion of poor women has also turned color. Although many components of social exclusion, experienced in the areas of security, housing, health, public goods, employment, education, and social resources, have sometimes presented similar and sometimes presented different views from the old stories of poverty, it has been observed that the size of the exclusion that is experienced by each woman is unique. Under the heavy conditions of poverty, it will be possible through multidimensional policies to understand the deep and multi-layered exclusion experienced by women, and to break this cycle which is at risk of continuing for generations.
