Abstract (EN)

This PhD thesis- Poverty and Dreams: Cinema as the Transferor of Social Atmosphere- aims to address the change of poverty and dreams of poor people within the framework of social transformation from a broad perspective. In this study, which focuses on poverty within historical processes, neoliberalism and the social atmosphere that it transforms within the framework of economic, political and sociological processes, poverty is evaluated in an economical, political and sociological context. In this study which deals with the transformation of poverty in the context of social atmosphere, together with the change in Turkish cinema within the framework of neoliberalism, a discussion on the meaning and expression crisis of Turkish cinema is being held. Gurbet Kuşları, Balatlı Arif, At, Bir Avuç Cennet, Başka Semtin Çocukları and Kara Köpekler Havlarken were selected and analysed with critical discourse analysis as representatives of 60s, 80s and 2000s of Turkish cinema. It has found that in the rhetorical context films were influenced by the social atmosphere in which they were produced and that the narratives of poverty were changed. In addition, the context of the dreams of the characters in the films and the way how they expressed their dreams have also changed. In the 1960s, dreams towards the city focused more on the benefit of society, while in the 1980s, dreams began to intersect with economic values and became individualized. In the 2000s, the dreams of the characters were formed on the basis of rent and market. Key Words: Poverty, Dreams, Social Atmosphere and Turkish cinema
