Investigating manager nurses fullfilling their job, qualifications and responsibilities

SUMMARY INVESTIGATING MANAGER NURSES FULLFELLING THEIR JOB, QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Münire TÜRKYILMAZ This study has been designed to contribute the health manpower planning efforts and aimed to identifity the job, qualification and responsibilities those performed successfully and to investigate the reasons for those are not, by manager nurses who work the hospital settings. The study has been carried out at 14 hospitals including two university, six health ministry, three social security ministry, and two military hospitals, in İzmir centrum. The sampling was consisted of 13 chief nurses, 45 vice-chief nurses and 99 supervisor nurses. The data has been collected from those 157 manager nurses, by means of "nursing job description form" developed for managing positions by Aksayan. The results of the study included: jobs, qualifications and resposibilities, identified in "job describition form" have been well-accepted, however poorly performed by manager nurses. Manager nurses, found to perform executive jobs well, on the other hand, they had lack of performance in jobs about organization, direction, coordination, education and evaluation. The reasons for this lack of performance were, structural and bureaucratic, like; uncertain and unsufficient job descriptions and limitations of sources. Besides manager nurses not being ready enough to their changing roles, has contributed reason. Vice chief nurses level of education has been found to have a statistically significant relationship with fullfilling identified jobs (p< 0.05). Longer education period found to be related with higher performance scores. On the contrary weekly working time was in negative and statistically significant relationship with job performance (p< 0.05). Supervisor nurses who work longer have had less performance in managing issues. Years in job, age, weekly working time and time in management position of chief nurses, vice chief nurses and supervisor nurses had no significant correlation with accepting and performing the management jobs.
