Nurse managers' perceptions of professional self-concept and study of the factors affecting

This study aimed to investigate the self-concept perception of nursing managers and related factors in the province of Antalya. The study was conducted with 159 nursing managers in nine hospitals in the city center who consented to participate in the study except those on the sick leave or annual leave. The study data were collected with a personal information form and Professional Self-Concept Scale. The data were analyzed with SPSS 18.0 program and the data analysis was carried out with percentage and frequency distribution analysis, arithmetic mean, Variance analysis (ANOVA), t test, Kruskall-Wallis Analysis, Tukey test, Mann-Whitney U test and Cronbach Alpha. The study data were evaluated on the basis of a significance level of 0.05. The mean score of professional self-concept scale was 110.08 (SS=8.16) while professional satisfaction subdimension mean score was 10.73 (SS=2.54). Moreover, professional competency subdimension mean score was found to be 23.70 (SS=2.57) and professional attitude and skills subdimension mean score was 75.64 (Sc=6.34). It was additionally noted that the self-concept perception of nursing managers indicated a significant difference in regard to marital status and the institution. Furthermore, it was maintained that nursing managers had higher scores of professional satisfaction if they were aged between 30-39 years old, they had a professional management experience of less than 5 years, they were working in a public hospital, they had an intent to leave within a year, and they weren't a member of a professional organization. However, it was also noted that nursing managers had higher scores of professional attitudes and skills if they were single, they were working in private hospitals, they didn't have an intent to leave within a year, and they were a member of a professional organization. In light of the study results, it was indicated that participant nursing managers had higher levels of self-concept perception and professional competency, attitudes, and skills while they had moderate levels of professional satisfaction. It was also reported that the professional self-concept perception of nursing managers differed in accordance with age, marital status, duration of professional management position, the medical institution, intent to leave within a year, and membership to a professional organization.
