Abstract (EN)
Brucellosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease that remains an important public health problem especially in rural Turkey. Our country is located in a area where brucellosis is observed endemically. The aim of this study was to identify Brucella species and investigate the in vitro susceptibilities to clinical isolates against antibiotics used in conventional treatment regimens. The study included 50 Brucella isolates obtained from clinical samples from the Çukurova University Balcalı Hospital between 2010-2012. The isolates were identified by the Vitek 2 automated system. In vitro activities of doxycycline, streptomycin, rifampicin, ciprofloxacin, tigecycline, gentamycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxsazole, erythromycin, ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulonic acid were evaluated against 50 Brucella isolates by the E-Test method. All isolates were identified as Brucella melitensis. All isolates were sensitive (%100) to doxycycline, streptomycin, gentamycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxsazole, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin and amoxicillin/clavulonic acid. In all 11 strains were yield intermediate sensitivity (%22) and one strain was resistant to rifampicin (%2) where as the others were sensitive. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxsazole had low minimal inhibitor concentration (MIC50; 0,023 ug/ml and MIC90; 0,064 ug/ml) values against all Brucella melitensis isolates. In our oppinion, we conclude that, the antimicrobial susceptibilities of Brucella species should be determined periodically and therapeutic approaches should be directed due this.Key Words: Antibiotic suspectibilty, Brucella spp, Brucellosis treatment, E-Test
