Analysis of violence in Youtube Turkey: An example of Youtubers

Television has maintained its central place in society for years as a medium with no alternative. However, the technology that has developed over time has succeeded in offering the audience a choice of media at the point of media consumption. Youtube is the most widely used medium among these options. Many studies on television show that any individual is exposed to scenes of violence of varying intensity and genres in at least one third of the time television is watched heavily. There has been a limited number of studies on violence on YouTube. In this direction, the study aims to reveal the data regarding the presence of violence in the content of Youtube, which broadcasts video in the network environment. Parallel to this, the study consists of four parts, excluding the introduction and conclusion part. In the first part, violence is discussed with all its dimensions as a concept, in the second part, the effects of the media on the society and the individual and the previous studies in the context of violence are evaluated, in the third part, the technological and institutional structure of Youtube is comprehensively revealed. In the fourth part, Youtube Turkey channels selected as samples were analyzed with the method of content analysis and the presence of violence in their content was revealed. As a result, the findings obtained within the scope of the thesis study revealed that violence was used in Youtube videos, the reactions to violence, showing the possible consequences of violence and using violence as a comedy tool normalized the acts of violence.
