Abstract (EN)

Purpose: The aim of our study is to invastigate the anatomical and functional outcomes and the postoperative complications of primary vitrectomy and silicon oil injection in our rhegmatogeneous retinal detachment patientsMethods: 34 eyes of 34 patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment who underwent primary vitrectomy and silicon oil injection at the department of ophtalmology, Adnan Menderes Universty between december 2006 and june 2010 were retrospectively rewieved and the anatomical and functional outcomes and complications were identified. Results: The mean age was 59 ± 16 years.(range 11-80 years). The cause of RRD was pseudophaki in % 20, trauma in % 15 and myopia in % 9 in our patients. The cause could not be identified in % 56 patients. The mean preoperative BCVA was 0.04 ± 0.08 (range HM-0.5) and the mean duration of symptoms were 24 ± 31 days (range 1-150 days). Preoperatively % 12 eyes had giant retinal tears, % 20 eyes had multipl breaks, % 18 eyes had PVR and % 15 eyes had vitreous haemorrhage. The postoperative follow-up period ranged from 3-39 mounths (mean 16 ± 11 mounths) and the 26 out of 34 patients (%76.5) achieved anatomical success at the end of the study. The difference between mean properative and postoperative BCVA was found statistically significant and the functional success was found % 47. Postoperatively we found IOP rise in 19 out of 34 patients (%55), cataract progression in 13 out of 19 phakic eyes (%68) and macular pucker in 5 eyes (%14.7). Anatomical failure was seen because of PVR progression in 6 patients (%17.6) and 2 patients (%5.9) after silicone oil removal. Conclusion: The results of primary anatomical and functional outcomes with primary vitrectomy for the rhegmatogenous retinal detachment was found successful and can be planned as an alternative procedure instead of the convantional scleral buckle procedure .Key Words: rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, pars plana vitrectomy, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, primary anatomical success, functional success
