Investigation of behavior in different environmental conditions of hoisting ropes

Abstract (EN)

Within the scope of this thesis, different types of hoisting ropes used in systems exposed to different environmental and operating conditions such as cranes in ports and ships, oil platforms in the oceans and mines were examined. Behaviors of ropes made of different cord types and different core materials against changing environmental conditions were investigated and the most suitable rope types for working in these environments were determined. Improvements were made according to these behaviors and its resistance to environmental conditions was investigated. In this study, corrosion behavior was investigated under five main headings: change in material mass, mechanical experiments, electrochemical methods, stress corrosion and surface characterization. Pre-stressed corrosion tests of the ropes were carried out with the stress corrosion test device designed and produced in accordance with different rope types. Pre-stress corrosion tests were also repeated with a solution containing sulfuric acid, considering the ropes in the mine environment. According to the data found, appropriate improvement methods were applied against corrosion. As a result; in environments where corrosion is present, it has been reached that if the hoisting rope is to be selected with hemp core, it will be appropriate to take Seale type rope, and if steel core is to be selected, it is necessary to decide according to the presence of stress in the environment. If there is no or limited stress in the environment, Warrington Seale type rope should be chosen, if there is stress corrosion in the environment and the ropes will work in overhead cranes, Standard type rope should be selected and if it will work in underground mineral deposits where the acid effect is intense, Warrington Seale type rope should be selected.
