Investigation of structural systems in high-rise buildings in terms of architectural form and structural behavior

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the purpose is to investigate the relationship between the structural systems and architectural forms in high-rise buildings. According to that purpose, the height limit for high-rise buildings is primarily investigated. The number of stories, construction year, and function of the highest buildings in the World and Turkey are studied and statistical analyses are conducted. The average high-rise building height in Turkey is found to be quite less than that of in the World. The structural systems in high-rise buildings are mainly examined and high-rise buildings with those structural systems are presented. Wind loads used in aerodynamic design and special requirements related to seismic design of high-rise buildings are investigated. The architectural form of the highest ten buildings in the World is studied and the precautions for lateral loads are examined in terms of facade form and structural system. The architectural form of the studied high-rise buildings is an inspiration idea for the buildings that are designed and analyzed. Three reinforced concrete buildings with different architectural forms and the same height are seismically designed according to Turkey Building Earthquake Code employing Mode Superposition Method. Natural modes to be considered in analyses, periods of these modes, and the first three mode shapes are studied. Base shear force coefficients and the maximum lateral top displacements of the case study high-rise buildings subjected to DD-2 earthquake ground motion are calculated in (X) and (Y) directions. Thereby, the seismic behavior of the considered high-rise buildings is evaluated. As a result, the differences in floor plans through building height and architectural form are found to affect the modal characteristics, as well as maximum lateral displacement and earthquake elastic strength demand.
