SUMMARYMaster ThesisTHE INVESTIGATION OF WEAR BEHAVIOURS OF A HIGH CARBON-HIGHCHROMIUM STEEL, OF A MANGANESE STEEL AND OF A LOW CARBON STEELSerkan ERDEMFırat UniversityGraduate School of Natural and Applied SciencesDepartment of Metallurgy Education2006, Page:ABSTRACTIn this investigation, nine testing samples were provided by exposing various heattreatments to three different materials. The wear behaviors of these nine samples were observedunder abrasive wear conditions. The samples were cut as appropriate proportions on lathe and then they were exposed toheat treatment for the experiment. The microstructure photos of each sample were investigatedand compared. After this process, the samples were subjected to abrasive wear testing. After these testing processes, a direct relation was found between the wear resistanceand the mechanical properties of the materials. Both the mechanical properties of the materialsimproved and the wear resistance increased. When the wear resistance of the materials whichnormalization heat treatment applied to decreased, the wear resistance of the materials whichexposed to the hardening process was increased. As a result of these researches, the wearresistance of low carbon steel was seen to be low. However the wear resistance of the materialscan be increased by adding alloy elements to them such as chromium and manganese. This study consists of the introduction in the first chapter, the general concepts of thewear in the second chapter, the effect of alloying elements on the steel properties in the thirdchapter, the experimental study in the fourth chapter, the experimental results in the fifth chapterand finally the discussions and recommendations in the sixth chapter. Keywords: Abrasive, abrasive action, abrasive wear, cold work tool steel.
