Abstract (EN)

The construction of the high-rise buildings in Turkey, especially in Istanbul, like in the developed countries has spreaded in the last years. The buildings have changed in time to respond different needs and demands with the opportunities of each period and have risen gradually. Current conditions force the high-rise buildings to compete. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the aesthetics concept of high-rise buildings in this competitive architectural environment on Istanbul example and state the typological changes in time.The thesis is consisted of six chapters:In the first chapter, the purpose, the content and the method of the research is explained.In the second chapter, the ?building? concept is stated in time, the basic ideas behind high-rise buildings are defined and the different ?high-rise building? definitions are given chronologically.In the third chapter, the important high-rise buildings are explained in a systematical and chronological way with the construction date, the city, the name of the building, the architect, number of floors/height and the function of the building. In this systematic, the conclusions are made on the development of high-rise buildings typologically.In the fourth chapter, the high-rise buildings are analysed based on the impact of form-function-construction on buildings and by the help of different types of categorisations on high-rise aesthetics, the typological system which is used in the thesis is explained.In the fifth chapter, the development of high-rise buildings in Istanbul are explained and the high-rise buildings in the city are listed chronologically with the same systematic in the third chapter. The examples are chosen to emphasise the historical importance of the building or to provide the visual information about the period. In this chapter, Istanbul is analysed by the help of the criteria mentioned in the fourth chapter and based on the criteria, typological categorisations are made to show the aesthetical changes of high-rise buildings in Istanbul.In the last chapter, all the reached conclusions of the process are gathered.
