Accounting information system in foundations supporting higher education institutions and an application

The continuous global and national economic growth since the industrial revolution has led to a change and increase in people's needs. The existence of non-profit organisations is of great importance as they meet the needs of the society. Today, foundations are defined as the 'third sector' after the public and private sectors. One way for foundations to expand their activities and increase their donations will be possible by providing factual and accurate information to their internal and external stakeholders. In this context, the aim of this study is to develop recommendations on the establishment of an accounting information system that will ensure the presentation of truthful information by foundations, which are non-profit organisations. The scope of this thesis is the accounting information system of Antalya University Support Foundation. The related foundation was taken as a sample and the data obtained by document review technique were analysed by case analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods. As a result of the study, it was determined that arrangements should be made in elements such as cost option, budget, financial statements, account plan in the foundation accounting information system application. It was found that some documents that should be included in the scope of foundation accounting information systems have not been created, there is no unity of practice regarding the budget, although there are practices regarding internal audit activities, there is no comprehensive internal control system, and the financial statements that must be prepared according to the legislation are insufficient in presenting fair financial statements. In line with the findings, an accounting information system model proposal for foundations has been developed, and legal regulations on foundation budget and accounting transactions have been proposed.
