Abstract (EN)

Throughout history, humankind has always needed a shell to maintain life; this shell is defined as "space" in the present day. According to humankind, space stands for a notion that protects human beings from external factors and provides privacy and belonging. In other words, space is a notion that identified with humans. It gains its meaning with a human being who has a subject and it is explicated subjectively. These explications fluctuate depending on one's personal interests, emotions, preferences, and perceptual states. There are numerous parameters for its space to be able to be perceived holistically, however, we generally perceive space through our senses and our most powerful perception element is visual perception. Due to this reason, the part of the brain that is related to visual perception is way broader than the reserved parts for our other senses. Within the scope of the study, it has been put emphasis on visual perception and its elements that have an impact on it. Besides, the experimentations have been conducted within the scope of visual perception. In the present study in which the relationship between human beings and space perception is reinforced, it is possible to suggest that design disciplines have been influenced and improved by technological advances. Advancing technology contributes to enhancing new methods within this period and the most rapid enhancement comes to the light with computers and technologies' being a part of our lives. By means of these technologies, supervision in design increases, and the flaws are minimized with the help of software. By this means, the performance of the product which is intended to be designed increases, and advancing technologies accelerate us. Particularly virtual technologies provide a chance of experiencing the product which is intended to be designed before the manufacture. These technologies bring out the products to a three dimension world by taking out it from two dimension interface. The aim of this thesis; to test the perception of space in the virtual reality environment, to examine how the designed spaces affect people and to clarify how these effects occur. Within the scope of the research, the questionnaire form prepared to test spatial perception consists of two parts. The first part consists of general information about the participants (age, gender, the department they study) and their concentration for the experiment, and the second part creates a semantic differentiation scale, which includes determining the effects of spaces with different pattern-line features on the perception of space. Within the scope of the study, it has been researched how the same and different surface and shape features change space perception virtual reality glasses that provide simulation support on a 1/1 scale. In accordance with this purpose, a virtual reality environment has been formed by using the "line" variable and the experiment, has been conducted with university students who receive education in design. It has been detected that according to the results obtained, the users' perceiving the interior space differentiates in terms of surface and shape features. Within the scope of the experiment, it has been formed physical components which provide the psychological impact that spaces leave on the user and it has been questioned how this impact creates a space perception.
