Analysis of transient seepage problems in the laplacedomain

Abstract (EN)

In this study, two-dimensional steady-state and transient seepage analysis of the embankment dam body and its base is examined using the finite element method (FEM) based on Galerkin's approach. The effects of different soil types, and the effects of horizontal drainage length and the cutoff wall on seepage are investigated in detail. Darcy's law and continuity equations are used as basic equations governing the movement of water in the soil. The amount of seepage that occurs in the transient case has been calculated by the FEM in the Laplace domain. The solutions obtained are transformed to the time domain using an effective numerical inverse Laplace method. A computer program has been prepared in Fortran programming language to find the hydraulic load, pore-water pressure values, and phreatic line pressure values at the points inside the dam body and the amount of seepage on the bottom and body of the dam. The hydraulic head values obtained for steady-state and transient seepage have been compared with the existing studies in the literature and the accuracy, applicability, and effectiveness of the program is demonstrated.
