Abstract (EN)

The main goal of this investigation is to analyse effects of Alzheimer's disease on the individuality. The sense of individuality is an indispensable element for each individual. The human communicates with his inner world and environment through this basic phenomenon. Upon Alzheimer, the loss of individuality harms the individual and its relationship to its environment. In general terms the motif "disease" in literary works is associated with social issues. Addtionally, literary language aims to clarify the doctor-patient-relationship and medical terms. The Alzheimer's disease, which is a type of dementia, is a main motif taking its place in novels. The loss of human skills and disease specific effects causing death lead to disastrous influences on people's life. For that reason, it comes increasingly into literary focus. Here, the following literary works in which the motif Alzheimer occurs have been analysed: Martin Suter's Small World, Arno Geiger's Der Alte König in Seinem Exil, Sevda Sarıkaya's Anılar Silinirken and Müge İplikçi's Kül ve Yel. Both the hermeneutic and the comparative method have been used. The protagonists suffer from the loss of individuality as a result of Alzheimer's disease. In the novels, the disease progress and influence on the main character and the figures around them are presented to the reader through a narrator with genre-specific varrying narrative styles. In all of these works, the protagonists are not aware of their illness. Selected works exemplary show the disease process, its effects on the patient and patient care and provide the basis for this study.
