Geology and tectonics of the vicinity of Zeytinli̇k village (Artvin)

In this study, establishing the stratigraphy and defining structural features of the vicinity of Zeytinlik Village (Artvin) by detailed geological mapping are aimed. In the study area which is located in the eastern part of the Eastern Pontides, Paleozoic aged Artvin Granitoids are seen at the lowermost of the sequence. Narlık Group consisting of Berta and Hızarlıdere formations of Liassic-Dogger age unconformably overlies this basement. Hızarlıdere Formation is unconformably overlain by Lower Cretaceous aged Öğdem Formation. Öğdem Formation conformably passes to Aşağımaden Formation consisting neritic limestones in the upward direction. A sequence consisting of Upper Cretaceous aged lava and pyroclastics in basic-intermediate-acidic composition which are arc volcanism products with sedimentary rock intercalations covers these units. This arc sequence in the region is represented by an conformable succession of Çatak, Kızılkaya, Çağlayan and Çayırbağ formations. Quaternary aged alluvium and debris are the youngest rock units of the study area. Folds, faults and unconformities are the most important structural features in this densely deformed study area. It is observed that main attitude in bedding direction towards the NNE-SSW and in dipping towards the WNW and ESE. Besides that, the units in the field are significantly folded as the fold axes generally are trending in NNE-SSW direction. The data obtained from the field shows that, the area was subjected to a compression in WNW-ESE direction by the end of Late Cretaceous.
