Comparison of social problem solving skills of mothers with and wi̇thout mentally retarded children

In the study, social problem-solving skills of children with mental disabilities and those who were comparatively investigated. social problem solvings levels between the two groups were also compared in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. The sample of the survey, 2017-2018 academic year in Gaziantep in the mentally disabled Rehabilitation Center two different educational service that students continue with their mother and two different secondary schools that do not have mental disability ' comprise students studying mothers. The study was contucted with 180 women (90 disabled children, 90 non-disabled children) and socio-demographic information form and social problem solving inventory were applied to the participants. According to the research findings, it was found that mothers with mentally handicapped children had lower social problem solving skills than mothers without mentally disability children. Mothers with mentally retarded children are considered to have lower levels of problem orientation and social problem solving than mothers without mentally disability children. According to the socio-demographic characteristics of the mothers with mentally retarded children (18-25 age group, married, 1500 TL and under-income, family history of violence, history of psychiatric and physical illness) is seen to be lower. The results of the research are discussed within the framework of the related literature. As a result, it is thought that it will be beneficial to give trainings at social service centers or Guidance research centers at certain periods in order to develop problem solving and coping skills for mothers with mentally disability children.
