Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research is to find out the opinions of teachers about the effect of sound-based sentences method and sentences method which is used for teaching of reading-writing skills to the students with mental retardation.10 teachers from the schools in Bolu and Düzce who are working in special education at least two years, were choosed for the study group from Western Karadeniz Area, using the method of purposeful sampling. 12 questions were asked to identify the opinions of teachers.Datas of the research were collected with half-configured meetings which is one of the methods of qualititative data collection. The questions on the meeting form were prepared by the helps of two specialists.After the research, the findings showed that the students, have the academic skill and reading-writing skill levels enough to signify themselves in daily life, can read slowly, have difficulty in understanding the readings; teachers find the sound-based sentences method faster, easier and they choose it because it is used in the schools, in the other hand the reasonsof prefering sentences method are to be more concrete, more meaningful and to have so many technics, the teachers said that, they are using different reading-writing instruction methods and the mixed method also. The reasons of choosing different methods are, first the children might have seperated individual attributes or the effectiveness of the method might be weak, so they use other methods if necessary. Also we realized that the sound-based sentences method has many benefits, some of them are to be faster, more concrete, easier, also to have activity diversity and to be generalized. The teachers? opinions about sentences method are that, the method is faster, more concrete and can be supported by visiual materials, but on the other side soun-based sentences method and sentences method have some limits. These are that, learning the writing skills get so much time with sound-based sentences method, it causes problems on the children with phisical disabilities and problems can be seen with learning the hand writing skill, sentences method has different limits, they are, the writing skill is significant and faster but memory based and take so much time otherwise the sound-based sentences method is forgotten easily, it has explanation problems, also has problems with pronunciation and combining the sounds, at last we concluded that the sound-based sentences method is a new method so that, it has got limits, although the sentences method takes so much time, it is memory based and it has limits about analizing the method.Key Words: Mental Retardation, Sound-Based Sentences Method and Sentences Method
