The Characteristics of zizyphus jujuba in the W/O type emulsion system regardin its physicochemistry and cosmetic efficacy

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of Zizyphus Jujuba in the W/O type emulsion system regarding its physicochemistry and cosmetic efficacy. Method of preparation, equipments used, the oil and the surfactant selected, their concentration and the temperature of the system are of importance for the stability of the system. For the preparation of W/O type simple emulsion, almond oil, silicone oil (Abil 350®) and the lipophilic surfactant cetyl dimethicon copolyol (Abil EM 90®) were used as the oily phase. The first step in this study was to formulate the emulsion system base and then the extract obtained using the leaves of Jujuba plant was added into the formulations in the aqueous phase at concentrations of 2% and 4%. It was determined that all three emulsions, of which one does not contain the plant extract and the others which contain the extract in different percentages, had homogeneous cream consistency and appearance. When the emulsions were diluted with almond oil, it was understood that their external phases were oil. These emulsions were examined under the light microscope and the microphotographs of the aqueous droplets were taken. The droplet sizes were determined using laser diffraction apparatus. Microscopic test, centrifugation, microbiological test, thermal test and rheological analysis were achieved on the formulations prepared. Effects of the emulsions, which were determined to be stable as a result of the tests above, were evaluated on the skin using ten volunteers. The efficacies of the three formulations were compared statistically. As a result of this study, it was determined mat all three products did not show significant efficacy on the skin regarding the values of moisture, sebum, pH and elasticity.Key Words: Zizyphus jujuba, W/O emulsion, evaluation.
