The new space settlement strategies of forced migrants the urban space settlement experience in Şanlıurfa of migrants who escaped from the Syrian civil war

This study addresses the practices of forced immigrants to settle in the space within the framework of relationship networks. The theoretical framework of the study consists of Lefebvre's production of space, Harvey's spatial segregation and Massey et al.'s relationship network theory. The study's hypotheses were produced from the problem of how immigrant relationship networks (Massey et al.) that work during the migration process work in the process of forced immigrants' settlement. Hypotheses were tested by qualitative research in the Şanlıurfa field, which received forced mass migration due to the Syrian civil war. Face-to-face interviews were held with 35 Syrian immigrants living in the Eyyübiye, Haliliye and Karaköprü districts of Şanlıurfa through purposeful sampling. Corporate Data were obtained from the Şanlıurfa Provincial Migration Administration, Metropolitan Municipality Migration and Compliance Services Department, AFAD Provincial Directorate of Managers and Neighborhood Mukhtars. In addition, the data of the study were collected and qualitatively analyzed with the managers of non-governmental organizations. The relationship networks used by the migrants when settling in the space were examined in three periods (acute, transitional and permanent). The findings from the field support the hypotheses of the research. According to this, the relationship networks used by forced migrants when settling in the space, the pressure of the primary needs, the class and identity based on the existing class, the foreign migration in the target space and the policies of humanitarian aid and the local people work within the culture of solidarity/exclusion. Immigrants apply to the networks in each period differ. The 'immigrant relationship networks' that work in the migration process are functional not only during the migration of the immigrants but also in the process of settling in the target space. The migrant relationship networks that Massey et al. define without focusing on the forced migration situation also function in the settlement process of forced migrants to the target place in varying forms and proportions depending on the contingent conditions. Thanks to this functionality, immigrants settle in the new space and are included in the production of space. In this case, the conditions for accessing and benefiting from migrant networks also change.
