The formal participation of Syrians to the employment in Ankara and attitudes of local people toward Syrians – An experimental design
Despite a significant Syrian population in Turkey, the proportion of Syrians with work permits is low. Promoting their legal employment is necessary for economic benefits, prevention of radicalization, and their right to work. However, given negative attitudes toward Syrian refugees in Turkey, it's crucial to examine how formal employment affects these attitudes. The study employed Contact Theory and Realistic Group Conflict Theory (RGCT) to examine the impact of formal employment of Syrians on attitudes toward them, considering workplace contact and workplace competition. An experimental survey with eight vignettes, varying across three variables with two levels each, was administered to 240 local workers in Ankara's industrial areas. The study found that formal employment is linked to positive attitudes (lower social distance) and lower threat perception, consistent with Contact Theory, while workplace competition is linked to negative attitudes (higher negative emotions) and higher threat perception, consistent with RGCT. However, no significant results were found for hypothesized workplace contact and interactions of manipulations. Also, threat perception was found as a partial mediator in the association between competition and attitudes, and as a full mediator between formal employment and attitudes.
Examining the attitudes of Turkish adults towards Syrian children from the perspectives of intergroup contact theory and social identity theory
This thesis research aims to examine the attitudes of Turkish adults towards Syrian children and the variables influencing these attitudes within the framework of the Intergroup Contact Theory and Social Identity Theory. Studies have revealed that negative attitudes towards Syrian children are one of negative conditions to which Syrian children are exposed. The research hypotheses were tested with 254 participants (185 Female, 61 Male, Mage =28.04) through an online survey consisting of various scales. Results revealed that when a Turkish child exerts more effort to obtain the reward, Turkish adults tend to and consider it fair to distribute the reward based on the principle of equity. However, when a Syrian child exerts more effort to obtain the reward, they tend to and consider it fair to distribute the reward based on the principle of equality. In addition, social distance (more willingness to engage with Syrians through a variety of means), (positive) emotions toward refugee children, (higher) religiosity and parenthood (having a child) were positively associated; while (more) exposure to Syrian refugees and (higher) income were negatively associated with attitudes toward refugee children. Finally, group attachment was positively correlated with negative attitudes toward Syrian refugee children. The role of international organizations on building state capacity for environmental migration management: A case study of Kenya
This thesis investigates the environmental migration management capacity-building strategies and initiatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and their impact on state capacity in Kenya. The case of Kenya is considered suitable for environmental migration management due to its vulnerability to climate change and environmental degradation, leading to frequent natural disasters and population displacement. The country has a significant number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to environmental factors. Kenya has collaborated with international organizations (IOs) to strengthen its environmental migration management capacity. The research conducted utilizes a combination of qualitative and mixed methods approaches, incorporating process tracing and semi-structured interviews. This study shows that the IOM's efforts to enhance institutional capacity in Kenya have a positive impact on institutional capacity and result in improved and more efficient methods of managing environmental migration. The study also indicates that the presence of IOs and IOM strengthens the state's environmental migration governance and the state's capacity to address migration caused by environmental factors. However, the study also identifies areas for improvement, such as policy change and climate change awareness. Cities, forced migration, and multi-level governance: Assessing berlin's policy towards unaccompanied minors
This thesis aims to investigate the relationship between cities and forced migration and explores the increasing role of cities in the Multi-Level Governance of migration. It focuses on the intersection of the local turn in migration and vulnerable refugee groups, mainly unaccompanied minors. Focusing on Berlin through process tracing and single case method, the thesis assesses Berlin's policy toward the unaccompanied minors on the Greek islands in a time frame of the European Refugee Crisis in 2015 until March 2022. It discusses the multilevel nature of local policymaking in migration and its multifaceted drivers as it demonstrates Berlin's interaction with actors at the vertical and horizontal levels and the defining (institutional and structural) and transformative (local discourses and actors) drivers that feature in Berlin's migration policymaking. While this study proves that there is a local turn in migration and cities are no longer solely responsible for the implementation of policies, since they formulate them, particularly for unaccompanied minors, it also reveals that cities are still constrained by the institutional factors that shape their capabilities and limitations against national and supranational actors.
The associations between collective narcissism and the solidarity-based collective action intentions of the local community on behalf of Syrians: The moderating role of in-group image threat
This thesis investigates the relationship between collective narcissism (CN) and the local community's intentions to engage in solidarity-based collective action (SBCA) on behalf of Syrian refugees in Türkiye, focusing on the role of in-group image threat. The hypotheses were tested using an online survey and with an experimental setup embedded in the survey. The data was analyzed based on the responses of 319 participants (210 Female, 105 Male, Mage =22.4) who identified themselves as Turkish since the study's independent variable is Turkishness-based national collective narcissism. The results revealed that higher CN scores were associated with lower intentions for SBCA. Findings also showed that under the in-group praise condition, participants demonstrated a significantly greater willingness to engage in SBCA compared to those under the in-group criticism condition. However, although the manipulation of in-group image threat had a significant impact on SBCA intentions, it did not moderate the relationship between CN and SBCA intentions. Consistencies or differences with previous studies and potential reasons for the discrepancies were discussed. Contributions and potential limitations were also presented.
Push and pull factors in international students' decision-making processes: Case of Somali students in Türki̇ye
International Student Mobility (ISM) has increased four times over the last quarter-century. Meanwhile, showing a remarkable leap, Türkiye has experienced a twenty-time increase in international student inflow. Somali student immigration is a worth-considering case, where a wide range of factors are underway, and this thesis aims to examine why and how these students ended up in Türkiye. Drawing on the literature on migration and ISM, this study analyzes the decision-making processes of international students at the macro, micro, and meso-levels. Although the research benefits from the theories and frameworks offered by the extant research which has focused on the popular destinations at the 'global center', the analytical purpose is to reveal how an emerging host country has turned into a viable option rapidly in the eyes of the Somali students. The empirical analysis is based on semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 30 students of Somali origin. The findings reveal that macro-level pre-migration factors were common to all students. While private school students were influenced by micro-level factors such as job prospects and family influence, public-school students were influenced by meso-level factors. Türkiye's policies at the macro-level and facilitating institutions at the meso-level were found to be effective for both groups. Contrary to market-driven assumptions that consider international students as rational consumers, the decision-making processes of these students who were at the periphery of the international education system were marked by limited information and various challenges that impede the alleged utility maximization in both short and long-term plans.
From old homeland to the new one: Migration movements and policies between 1918-1923
The period between 1918 and 1923 witnessed a huge transformation process. Various migration waves, civilian tragedies, challenging policies and ideologies, occupations and liberations took place during this period. Following Introduction, Literature Review and Methodology chapters, this study discusses the key migration concepts, their "descent and emergence", from a genealogical perspective and links them to the migratory movements between 1918-1923. In Chapter IV, it explains the migratory movements starting from the Armistice of Mudros. These movements could fall into five main categories: i) Refugees fleeing conflict or war zones such as the White Russians in the West or Muslim and non-Muslim groups in the East, ii) Repatriation of the Armenian, Rum, Kurdish and Arab refugees who were forced to migrate during the World War I, iii) Incoming migrants in the Armistice period to seize the majority considering the Wilsonian Principles, iv) Consecutive migration movements due to the occupations and liberations in Anatolia, v) Migrations upon the decision of Allied Powers or the Istanbul and Ankara Governments. Since all these movements are often intertwined, they are discussed regionally. In Chapter V, migration policies during the period are examined. It is found that both Istanbul and Ankara governments had anti-migration stance. Nation- and state-building efforts, maintaining population dominance, establishing order and security, as well as socio-economic concerns are the main driving factors behind the migration policies of Istanbul and Ankara governments.
Fictional narratives and the migrant experience: Exploring migration experience in Italy through the voices of Somali women writers
This thesis analyses fictional works of Somali migrant women in Italy through postcolonial and poststructuralist feminist lenses. The analysed texts are Far From Mogadishu (1994) by Shirin Ramzanali Fazel, Little Mother (2011) by Cristina Ali Farah, and Adua (2015) by Igiaba Scego. The thesis aims to uncover the ways fiction reflects the experiences of immigrants and discuss the implications of migration policies in the fictional works. It draws on the theoretical and conceptual insights of the fields of Migration Studies, Political Science, International Relations, and Literature. This interdisciplinary approach provides a platform for engaging with the complexities of migration and the multifaceted identities it engenders. The analysed narratives, which are based on historical and political events, promote a more in-depth comprehension of the migrant experience. They also act as advocates for a more individualistic perspective within the field of Migration Studies alongside broader structural analysis. This research contributes to the literature on migration, gender, and postcolonialism while emphasizing how critical it is to give marginalized communities' voices more weight in literary discourse. Keywords: Somalia, Italy, Women Migrant Writers, Postcolonialism, Poststructuralist Feminism
Assessment of gender-based asylum claims under the international protection regime: The case of Afghanistan
The main aim of the thesis is to deliberate in which conditions gender-based violence can be evaluated as persecution and analyze legal documents concerning international protection regimes within the gender lens by considering gender-based potential asylum seekings from Taliban-governed "new" Afghanistan. The study also explores precedents about gender-based violence and gender-based asylum claims from international judicial and quasi-judicial organs and consists of a guide for their assessment of administrative courts, PMMs, and PDMMs regarding the particular social group. Parties of the international protection regime must protect against violation of women's and LGBTIQ+'s rights in Afghanistan because of the positive obligations in gendered violence, including Turkey. Within this context, the 1951 Convention and the 1967 Protocol generally cover the conditions for recognizing and ceasing refugee status and the rights enshrined in that status. In addition, the Istanbul Convention and CEDAW protect gender-based asylum claims, and these conventions are related directly to the study subject. Although after the withdrawal decision from the Istanbul Convention, this Convention is no longer applicable in Turkish law, it is also examined because of its noteworthiness and some arguments about the unlawfulness of withdrawal. Keywords: Gender-based asylum claims, membership of a particular social group, refugee status determination, refugees from Afghanistan.
The effect of morally framed messages on the attitudes ofthe local community toward Syrian refugees in Türkiye
This thesis investigates the relationship between moral dimensions and attitudes towards Syrian refugees in Türkiye. To explain this relationship, two studies were conducted, one correlational and the other experimental. The first study examined which moral dimensions from the Moral Foundation Theory (MFT) and Morality as Cooperation (MAC) theories were associated with negative attitudes toward Syrian refugees. 102 participants participated in the first study voluntarily. The result of the first study revealed that the dimensions of care/harm, fairness, sanctity/degradation, and loyalty/betrayal were related to negative attitudes towards Syrian refugees. The care/harm and fairness dimensions had a mitigating effect on negative attitudes, while the sanctity/degradation and loyalty/betrayal dimensions had a reinforcing effect on negative attitudes. Based on the findings of the first study, the second study focused on the impact of morally framed message content son attitudes towards Syrian refugees in Türkiye. Three message content groups were created: care/harm and fairness, sanctity/degradation and loyalty/betrayal, and a control group. 670 university students participated in the research in return for bonus points. Participants in the sanctity/degradation and loyalty/betrayal groups had more negative attitudes towards Syrian refugees, whereas those in the care/harm and fairness group had less negative attitudes. The attitudes of the control group fell between the other two groups. This study approaches attitudes toward Syrian refugees in Türkiye from the perspective of morality and provides insights for non-governmental organizations, policymakers, public institutions, media, and academic researchers working in the migration field.
Rusça konuşan öğrencilerin eğitim deneyimleri ve Türk toplumuna entegrasyon süreci
This thesis explores Russian-speaking children's difficulties at school and in Turkish society. This thesis also studies Russian-speaking mothers who moved to Turkey as the mother-children topic is interconnected. For this purpose, the reasons for the relocation of Russian-speaking mothers to Turkey, their educational and work experience, the study of the Turkish language, and their adaptation were considered. Then, the topics concerning the Russian-speaking children of these mothers were studied as they are the main subjects of this work. To investigate these children's experiences at school and in Turkish society, the criteria for choosing a school, the adaptation of first-generation migrant children, relations between teachers, classmates, Russian-speaking children, and their mothers, the study and use of Russian and Turkish in a multicultural family; the influence of languages on the academic performance of Russian-speaking children, the role of parents in the education of these children; identification of Russian-speaking children, ways of maintaining Russian identity in Turkey and children's plans concerning study, work and country of residence were examined. Qualitative semi-structured online interviews with Russian-speaking mothers were conducted to study the educational and integration experience of Russian-speaking children in Turkish society. In total, 15 mothers took part in the study, and 21 children were examined. Thus, this study is a scientific work that can fill the gap in the literature regarding Russian-speaking children in Turkey since this thesis presents a general description of children and the difficulties they face in educational and integration processes that require special attention for further study and problem-solving.
Migrant women's shelters: A comparative analysis of Germany and Türkiye
The intersection of migration and domestic violence is a crucial field in migration studies, however, some aspects have not yet been addressed. This study analyzes the role of women's shelters in supporting immigrant women in Germany and Türkiye through an analysis of the historical process, national and international policies, and institutional frameworks. The study takes intersectional theory as its theoretical underpinning, which argues that women are oppressed by not only gender but through the intersection of multiple identities, such as migration statuses. This theory also discusses the challenges that immigrant women experience with violence, as well as the challenges faced by intersecting identities in political and structural contexts. The thesis aims to understand the differences between the practices in Germany and Türkiye and to analyze the protection mechanisms immigrant women have against domestic violence. Thus, the qualitative comparative analysis method is used to compare women's shelters for immigrant women in Germany and Türkiye. Within the scope of the method, historical time, legal protection, the status of shelters, and the GREVIO reports on the Istanbul Convention were identified as factors. In Germany, the needs of immigrant women in women's shelters are more often addressed in the context of intersectionality. There are specialized services and efforts to address language barriers and special needs. However, it is not yet possible to talk about an intersectional approach for shelters in Türkiye. Although both countries have measures to address domestic violence, there are bureaucratic barriers and inclusion gaps for immigrant women in Turkish shelters. In this context, by positioning women's shelters as key protection centers, this research contributes to a comparative debate between Germany and Türkiye on the provision of inclusive and accessible support services for immigrant women.
The influence of social structure on the brain drain: The case of Somalia
This thesis explores how Somali social structure, particularly the clan system, contributes to the phenomenon of brain drain. The research examines the ways in which deeply embedded clan-based practices, which nearly affect all aspects of Somali society, influence the migration decisions of skilled Somali people. Methodologically, the research employs a qualitative research design, utilizing semi-structured interviews involving 30 participants. Findings reveal that several interconnected factors contribute to the migration of skilled Somalis, all of which are either caused by or closely tied to the clan system. The research identifies the clear link between the brain drain and clan-based structures, highlighting how nepotism and the absence of meritocracy restrict political participation and access to employment for educated individuals. That is, clan-based factors in Somalia place skilled individuals at a disadvantage. Notably, educated Somali women experience double marginalization due to the clan-based rules that put women in an underprivileged position and the general hindrance the clan system creates for educated individuals. It also identifies Somalia's situation as one of "circular brain waste," highlighting the persistent and recurring brain drain caused by the clan system. The study sets out to confirm that promoting meritocratic leadership and minimization of clan dominance will curtail brain drain and encourage educated Somalis to return home. Lastly, it proposes inclusive reforms to raise Somalia's human capital retention.
Migration experiences of Syrian Turkmen women: The case of Gaziantep
The aim of this study is to examine the processes and experiences of Syrian Turkmen migrant women who settled in Gaziantep due to the civil war that started in Syria in 2011, before and after migration. Considering the ethnicity variable as a component to be taken into account, this study questions the stance of Syrian Turkmen women's communities in their traditions, gender roles in Syria before the war, and their struggles to become a refugee woman after migrating to Turkiye, their life experiences and cultural adaptation processes. In this process, in which migration from Syria continued, Syrian Turkmen women, who were an important group of Syrians who had ties to Turkiye before the war and migrated to Turkiye after the war, were determined as the research subjects. Syrian migrant Turkmen women are examined in the context of those in Gaziantep. In this context, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women from different age, education, profession and income groups. In the findings of the study, which was conducted using the qualitative research method, it was found that Syrian Turkmen migrant women had an easier and more positive experience of adaptation to immigration and social integration than other groups due to their familiarity with the language and culture. However, it was concluded that they had difficulties in their struggles as migrant women in the first stage of the migration process due to their Syrian immigration status and gender roles. Despite this, it has been observed that women should not always be perceived as victims in the migration process, and that immigrant women continue their struggle for life despite the many problems they experience.

A comparative overview of migration policies: Experiences of Germany and Türkiye
Immigration and migration have been one of the issues that many countries attach importance to from past to present. The passage of time and the change in the subject or issues experienced or caused have not caused migration and migration to lose their meaning, on the contrary, they have caused it to come to the agenda again in different shapes and forms. The Syrian Civil War, which started in 2011, and its effects are one of the most current examples of this situation. Syrians who had to leave their country due to the civil war took refuge in different countries of the world with different statuses. Although this interaction was in terms of cultural and social relations within the framework of abstract concepts, it was also in terms of housing and workplace within the framework of concrete concepts. The aim of this study is to reveal the migration policies of Turkey and Germany and to compare the last five-year period in terms of Syrians. The main hypothesis of the research is; While refugees provide access to housing, labor force and other needs within the framework of the legal responsibility of local governments and the voluntariness of non-governmental organizations in Germany; In Turkey, refugees meet these needs with the initiative of local governments and the voluntary services of non-governmental organizations. Within the scope of the research, firstly, the immigration policies of Türkiye and Germany were compared on a national scale. Keywords: Migration, Türkiye, Politics, Germany

Imipact of the Syrian crisis and migration on the agricultural labor force sector in Syria and Türkiye
This research was conducted to understand the labor force in both Northwest Syria and Türkiye before and after the Syrian crisis. Data were collected through 432 surveys carried out during June and July 2023 with agricultural and livestock workers. The data were analyzed using the SPSS program. The results of this study revealed that conflict and insecurity in northwestern Syria are the primary drivers for Syrian agricultural laborers seeking refuge in Türkiye. Syrian laborers are attracted to Türkiye due to robust security conditions, a well-established agricultural sector, and job opportunities in agriculture and livestock. Daily wages in Türkiye are significantly higher than in Syria, both before and after the crisis. Workers who faced insufficient daily wages employed various strategies to supplement their income. Laborers in agriculture and livestock encountered challenges, including seasonality, unsustainability, and low wages before and after the crisis. In Türkiye, additional challenges included difficulties in traveling outside the region. In Syria, support mechanisms included public transportation and cooperative organization but had a limited impact on daily wages. In Türkiye, a substantial majority did not receive any support. Support mechanisms were insufficient in addressing low daily wages in both countries. Syrian agricultural laborers in Türkiye contributed to higher agricultural production and exports. They do not require work permits, making their employment more accessible. NGOs implemented agricultural and livestock projects in both Syria and Türkiye, providing job opportunities. Women had job opportunities in agriculture and livestock in both Syria and Türkiye, with variations in activities. Keywords: Syria, Türkiye, Migration, Agriculture, Labor.
Türkiye as a transit country for international students from the Mano River Union countries
This study investigates the intentions and future plans of West African students in Türkiye, specifically exploring whether they perceive the country as a stepping-stone towards Europe, and the USA. The study investigates the factors that influence African students' decisions to pursue higher education in Türkiye, their career goals after graduation, and their opinions on exchange programs such as Erasmus+ and USA Work and Travel. Through in-depth interviews, the study reveals a complex interplay of factors influencing these students' decisions, including the quality of education, employment opportunities, and socio-political integration in Türkiye. The findings suggest that although several African students value the educational possibilities and scholarships offered in Türkiye, they frequently encounter significant challenges in adapting or integrating socially and politically into Turkish culture. Restricted career opportunities and perceived bias influence their contemplation of further migration from Türkiye to Western countries or return to their native countries. This trend highlights a significant disparity between the educational setting and the wider socio-economic context in Türkiye for foreign students. In theory, the study enhances our comprehension of international student mobility and the factors that impact their migration choices. It emphasizes the significance of analyzing both the educational and socio-political aspects in order to have a holistic understanding of the experiences of international students. Essentially, the results indicate that there is a requirement for improved support systems, such as more adaptable scholarship programs, strong career services, and activities focused on enhancing social and political integration. Policy recommendations encompass the enforcement of anti-segregation laws, streamlining administrative procedures for international students, and cultivating robust alumni networks to offer continuous assistance. By focusing on these specific areas, Türkiye can improve its ability to retain international talent and ensure that the educational investments made by these students result in long-term benefits for both individuals and the host country.
Women's ngos in Turkey and Syrian refugee women: An analysis of evolving attitudes and policies since 2011
The primary purpose of this thesis is to understand how the women's non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Turkey have been responding the Syrian migration since 2011 and explore their attitudes and policies towards Syrian refugee women that are placed under the temporary protection regime in Turkey due to the Syrian civil war and will be referred as refugees in the thesis. Through a qualitative methodology based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with some of the selected women NGOs and broad review of websites of the women NGOs, this thesis will analyze the evolving responses, attitudes and policies, projects and works of women NGOs. The study will assess whether it is possible to talk of solidarity ties between women's NGOs and Syrian refugee women while portraying their general views of Syrian migration. The thesis will analyze women's NGOs' perspective and response through periodization and in terms of their awareness, capacity and contextual factors of state-civil society relations and rising anti-immigrant, anti-gender and racist attitudes in Turkey in the last few years. The thesis aims to go beyond the existing studies and shed light on dual vulnerabilities of Syrian refugee women, shaped by intersecting factors of gender and migration, and the systemic barriers that hinder their access to essential services and rights. The NGOs' efforts to address these challenges highlight themes of empowerment, solidarity, and advocacy, often constrained by limited resources and socio-political context of Turkey.
