Investigating the impact of nutrition education given to parents on adolescent swimmers' consumption habits and nutrition knowledge
Healthy nutrition for adolescent athletes is important for both achieving ideal growth and optimum performance. As nutrition of the adolescence is usually the responsibility of their parents, the healthy nutrition program provided by the parents to their child is important for both growth, performance, and also to gain healthy consumption habits. This can be achieved if the parents have a high level of nutritional knowledge. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of sports nutrition education given to parents on the nutritional knowledge and consumption habits of adolescent athletes. The study was carried out in the swimming department of Galatasaray Sports Club with 60 volunteered athletes. At the beginning of the study, demographic information form, food frequency, and nutritional knowledge questionnaire for athletes were applied to the athletes. Immediately after data collection, nutrition education was given to the athlete's parents. Six weeks after education, questionnaires were applied to the athletes again. After education, there were statistically significant increases in the consumption of some foods such as eggs, pulses, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and bread in the dairy group (p<0.05). Also, there was a statistically significant increase in both general and sports nutrition knowledge levels (p<0.05). This study showed that parental education has positive effects on adolescent athlete's consumption habits and nutritional knowledge.
Investigation of the effects of different online nutrition counseling interventions on weight control
This thesis study aimed to investigate the differences in the effectiveness of different methods of online nutritional therapy by utilizing three different methods used in the online consulting system of individuals. It included only female adults over 18 years old and older as participants. Intervention groups were formed according to the follow-up system preferred by individuals among the volunteers. Three different intervention methods were examined in the study: Motivation Group (in contact with each other via WhatsApp), Monitoring Group, and Mail Group. While individuals in all intervention groups were followed for 8 weeks, weekly meetings were held with the dietitian in the Motivation Group and the Monitoring Group. The calorie and nutrient content of the diets of all participants will be Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) for the standardization of nutrition programs. Physical activity for 165 minutes per week is added to their program. Total 102 female patients participated in this study. When the weekly weight follow-ups were examined for each group within themselves, significant weight loss was detected every week as well as BMI change. The highest weight loss was observed in the motivation group with 9.49 kg. Then the monitor group comes in with 8.02 kg and the mail group with 3.7 kg. These differences are statistically significant. Body Mass Index differences are higher at Motivational Group than other groups and this difference is statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Participant's weekly dietitian-led interactive Web-based meeting participation, communication with each other were important predictors of weight loss in an 8-week intervention. Comparison and consistency of malnutrition inflammation score with antropometry and spesific malnutrition screening tools for adult and elder hemodialysis patients
This study aimed to compare and contrast adult and elderly hemodialysis-treated patients with end stage renal disease using multiple specific malnutrition screening tools, nutritional index and anthropometry and to determine the best possible risk of age-specific malnutrition. Based on Malnutrition Inflammation Score (MIS), a special screening tool for dialysis patients. The study was carried out with 140 patients (n=70 adult, n=70 elder) who were treated for hemodialysis between March-June. General information from all participants in the study was obtained through a questionnaire, and biochemical data were obtained retrospectively, and anthropometry and MIS were examined. In addition 7-Point Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and Nutritional Risk Index (NRI) in the adult group, Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) were calculated in the elderly group. In the adult group, 57.1% malnutrition risk was observed according to MIS, 24.3% mildly and moderately malnourished according to 7-Point SGA and 44.3% different stage malnutrition according to NRI. In the elderly group, malnutrition risk was observed in 67.1% according to MIS, malnutrition risk in 62.9% and severe malnutrition in 8.6% according to MNA, and different stage malnutrition in 38.3% according to GNRI. In the ROC analysis based on MIS, the 7-Point SGA in adults and GNRI in the elderly were found to have the highest concistency in predicting malnutrition. Although screening tools can be used in dialysis patients, the use of MIS may be a priority because it is both practical and more sensitive for malnutrition.
Evaluation of eating habits and use of food supplements according to awareness levels of health faculty students during the pandemic
The research was conducted to evaluate the relationship between eating habits and dietary supplement use of health sciences students and their awareness levels during Covid-19. For this purpose, a questionnaire including nutritional habits, supplement usage, and Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ-30) were applied to 241 students aged ≥18 who were actively studying at Yeditepe University Faculty of Health Sciences. Since distance education was started due to the pandemic, an online questionnaire was applied to the participants. 62.6% of the participants consisted of Nutrition and Dietetics, 19.1% Nursing, 18.3% Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation students. According to the MEQ-30 score averages, all of the students were at a high level of awareness, and Nutrition and Dietetics students had higher awareness levels compared to other departments (p<0.05). 120 students with higher awareness ate healthier during the pandemic process. 66.4% of the participants think some dietary supplements are beneficial and 23.7% of the participants used dietary supplements. The majority of participants who use dietary supplements were Nutrition and Dietetics students. The difference between the awareness levels of those who use dietary supplements and those who do not was insignificant (p>0.05) but the effect of the awareness level on the use of dietary supplements could not be observed. 38.6% of the students using dietary supplements started to use it with the pandemic. The most commonly used dietary supplements were vitamin D and C, and the majority used dietary supplements to protect and maintain current health. During Covid-19, changes were observed in students' eating habits and dietary supplement use.
Attitudes and approaches of nutrition and dietetic students at different education levels to dietary supplements
The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in the opinions and attitudes of Nutrition and Dietetics students towards nutritional supplement products with the increase in their nutrition education levels. The study was conducted with the 118 students studying at Yeditepe University at the Nutrition and Dietetic department, and 60 of them are undergraduate first-year students, 37 of them last year students, and 21 of them master students. The data were collected face to face and online voluntarily with the data collection form prepared by us. Statistical evaluation of the data was made with SPSS 25.0 Windows version. The differences between the students' views and nutrition education levels were evaluated using the chi-square test. As a result of the study, it was determined that there were statistically significant differences between the students' views on dietary supplements and their nutrition education levels (p<0.05). The higher the nutrition education level, the higher the awareness of dietary supplements. However, the consumption and recommendation rates of these products are also quite high. As a result, it is important for public health to expand the curriculum on the rational use of dietary supplements and primarily to promote adequate and balanced nutrition.
Evaluation of adult's food addictions according to their chronotype and the number of consulting to A dietician
Chronotype, known as a circadian preference, may vary from person to person. Although a majority of people are intermediate type, evening type people closely linked with addiction behavior like food addiction. Food addiction is found to be more common in obese people who have difficulties maintaining their weight. This cross-sectional descriptive study was aimed to investigate the relationship between food addiction and the number of applications for a dietitian regarding the chronotypes of the participants. This study was conducted with 121 people who applied for a private nutrition counseling center in Istanbul between July 2021 and September 2021. People who are under the age of 18 and pregnant were excluded from the study. Anthropometric measurements, Morningness Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS), and a questionnaire consisting of general characteristics and eating habits of the individuals were applied and collected. As a result of the study, the prevalence of food addiction was 15% in a sample. A significant difference was found between food addict people and non-food addicts in terms of Body Mass Index (p=0.023). While there was no relationship between food addiction and chronotype score, evening type was seen more commonly in food addict people. Regarding the number of applications for a dietitian, the highest application number was observed in food addict and evening type people. IVF uygulanan fazla kilolu ve obez kadınlarda Akdeniz tipi beslenme ile sağlanan vücut kompozisyonundaki değişimin başarılı gebelik oranlarına etkisinin araştırılması
Obese women have lower pregnancy rates than normal-weight women undergoing assisted reproductive treatment (ART). This study aimed to increase the fertility of obese individuals by weight loss with a Mediterranean Diet (MED). The participants were divided into two groups: a study group that underwent a 12-week weight loss MED before starting an In Vitro Fertilization / Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (IVF/ICSI) cycle, and a control group that started with no previous interventions. Thirty patients were enrolled in this study. All analyses were performed using R (version 4.1.2) and R Studio (version 1.4.1106) software. T-test analyses revealed that experimental and control groups were not significantly differed in their initial weight (Mdifference = 0.51, t (28) = 0.12, p = .906), age (Mdifference = 0.20, t (28) = 0.14, p = .892) and their score of MEDAS (Mdifference = 0.33, t (28) = 0.70, p = .492). Individuals who lost 1 kilogram were 0.62 times more likely to get pregnant than individuals who did not lose any weight. Two patients in the study group were spontaneously pregnant. Finally, embryo quality did not significantly predict pregnancy success (p = .998). As a result of the study, there is a need for more extensive studies due to the limited number of people. Evaluation of teachers' fat phobia levels and healthy lifestyle behaviors
Tansu Tuğcu, Evaluation of Teachers' Fat Phobia Levels and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors. Yeditepe University Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, MSc Thesis, İstanbul, 2022. This research was carried out with 136 teachers between October 2021 and November 2021 on teachers teaching students aged 7-17 in a private educational institution, in order to evaluate teachers' fat phobic attitudes and healthy lifestyle behaviors. The study was carried out on 121 female and 15 male participants, aged between 18-57, who gave education in Bursa Private Emine Örnek Educational Institutions after the ethics committee approval. An online questionnaire including sociodemographic information, height and weight, fat-phobia scale, and healthy lifestyle behaviors scale was applied to the participants. 91.9% of the teachers were found to be fat phobic. The total scores of healthy lifestyle behaviors and the scores of the fat phobic teachers in the interpersonal relationships and stress management sub-dimensions of this scale were found to be statistically significantly lower (p< 0.05). Considering that interpersonal relationships and stress management behaviors have an impact on the development of fat phobia, it has been concluded that teachers should receive more training in this area and that it is possible to raise children and adolescents in a non-fat phobic environment. İstanbul'da bir vakıf üniversitesindeki diyetetik öğrencilerinin içselleştirilmiş kilo önyargılarının obezitesi olan bireylere yönelik damgalayıcı tutum, inanç ve yaklaşımlarına etkisi
From the public health perspective, how and to what extent dietetics students internalize weight and its reflection on the client and/or patient's attitudes and beliefs is crucial. This study aims to understand the effect of dietetics students' weight internalization and their dietetic approaches, attitudes, and beliefs toward clients with obesity and their fat phobia. Totally 148 students from the 3rd, 4th, and Master's grades of the Yeditepe University Nutrition and Dietetics Department participated. Weight bias internalization (WBIS-M) scores were the highest, with a mean of 2.50±1.90 for 3rd-grade students, and a significant difference was found between internalization scores between 4th and Master's students (p=0.042). All students' mean body mass index (BMI) was in the normal weight range, and correlation analysis revealed that the student's WBIS-M score increased as the BMI increased (p=0.017). Students' overall mean fatphobia score was at the mild level, and no significant difference was observed between the groups (p=0.256). Although the diet patterns, blood parameters, and physical activity status of the two hypothetical case samples diagnosed with lactose intolerance used in the study were the same, the suggestions of the client with obesity, such as reducing carbohydrates (p=0.004) and weight loss (p=0.000), are indicators of fat-phobic attitude. In addition, the client with obesity was scored as having worse diet quality (p=0.000), worse general health status (p=0.000), and worse daily physical activity status (p=0.014). As a result, during Nutrition and Dietetics education, students' awareness should be increased to consider the etiology of obesity apart from the individual's control.
Determination of the knowledge level, attitudes and food availability of pregnant women about food safety: Çerkezköy county sample
This study aimed to determine pregnant women's knowledge level, attitudes about food safety, and food availability. The study was conducted with 192 volunteer pregnant participants who applied to Family Health Centers in Çerkezköy district of Tekirdağ between January 12, 2022 and August 1, 2022. A data collection form about food safety and "Household Food Security Survey Module -Short Form" was used to measure food availability. The researcher measured anthropometrics. It was determined that 96.4% (n=185) of the participants did not know exactly the concept of food safety. The mean score of the participants for the "Level of Knowledge" sub-dimension was 28.04±24.20; for the "hygiene" sub-dimension, it was 41.02±32.85, while it was 33.25±28.31 for "Food Separation" sub-dimension. For the "cooking," "cooling," and "consumption" sub-dimensions, the mean scores were 38.80±35.24, 16.67±22.36, and 44.62±22.68, respectively. The total scores from all the sub-dimensions vary between 2 and 80.4; the mean score was 35.28±21.58. The Kuder Richardson-20 coefficient of the data collection form is 0.940. The mean score of the Household Food Security Survey Module -Short Form was 2.04±1.95, which indicates low food security. As a result, in the research group consisting of pregnant women in the Çerkezköy district, the knowledge levels of pregnant women about food safety are low. Their scores for performing the right application of food safety practices are low. According to food security levels, pregnant women had low food security. Larger-scale studies are needed to draw attention to the importance of the subject and to ensure that necessary precautions are taken. Investigation of changes in fat preferences according to mindful eating levels of individuals applying to a private diet clinic
The research was conducted to examine the change in fat preferences according to the mindful eating (ME) levels of individuals who applied to a private diet clinic. For this purpose, a questionnaire study was applied to 97 participants between the ages of 18-65 who applied to a private diet clinic for online diet service. As a data collection tool, the questionnaire, including the Mindful Eating Questionnaire-30 (MEQ-30) and the Fat Preference Questionnaire, was sent to the participants online. 84.5% of the participants were women, and 15.5% were men. It has been observed that men find fatty foods more tasty than women (p=0.016). The average body mass index (BMI) values of the participants were 24.4 kg/m2. No statistically significant difference was found between the participants' BMI values and MEQ-30 scores. Although the high BMI group (BMI≥25 kg/m2) found the high-fat options more delicious, it was determined that they restricted dietary fat more (p= 0.008 and p= 0.016, respectively). It was observed that participants with high mindful eating levels found high-fat foods less tasty and preferred them less frequently (r=-0.291 p=0.004, r=-0.259 p=0.011). In addition, it was found that participants with high eating discipline scores restricted dietary fat more (r=0.246 p=0.015). In the study, it was observed that the mindful eating levels of individuals may have an effect on their fat preferences.
Examination of the relationship between anxiety level in exam period and nutrition behaviors in university students
The fact that anxiety caused by exam stress triggers malicious eating behavior in individuals and makes this behavior a lifestyle of the individual is an essential risk for obesity and other related comorbidities. The main goal of this dissertation was to determine the degree of anxiety levels among university students relevant to the exam and the impact of this anxiety on eating behaviors based on the level of nutritional awareness. This thesis was conducted with 90 participants who are first and third-year undergraduate students studying at Yeditepe University Nutrition and Dietetics department. The data collection process consists of two stages. At the first stage of the data collection, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was used to assess students' state and trait anxiety levels, and 24-hour dietary recall was used to determine the nutrition status of the students. Also, demographic information was collected using a structured questionnaire, including personal and health information. The second stage of the data collection includes the State Anxiety Inventory that is used to determine the state anxiety level of the students, Westside Test Anxiety Scale that is used to determine exam anxiety level of the students, and 24-hour dietary recall used to determine the nutrition status of the students. In the light of this study, it was found that there was an increase in psychological stress levels in university students due to the exam, but the increased exam stress did not have a statistically significant effect on eating habits in terms of calorie consumption. In addition, it was found that there was a statistically significant decrease in the number of meals of the students during the exam period compared to the pre-exam period. When the first and third grades were compared, there was no statistically significant difference in nutrition. In conclusion, while the exam period caused an increase in anxiety levels among university students, the number of meals decreased, but no calorie-based change was detected.
Evaluation of adults' body mass index according to their chronotypes
The circadian rhythm, also known as the daily cyclic system, has created different chronotypes, known as different rhythm preferences, that vary from person to person, depending on many factors such as age, gender, genetics and working life. It is also seen as the mechanism underlying important health problems such as obesity which is the one of the biggest problems in developed and developing countries. This thesis study was conducted with 80 adults who applied to Dietitian Zeynep Ezgi Özkan Nutrition and Diet Counseling Center in Tekirdağ between March 2019 and July 2019 in order to examine the relationship between chronotypes and body mass indexes of adult individuals. Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire was used to determine participants' chronotype. The data were collected using a structured form containing the socio-demographic information of the participants, their nutritional habits and anthropometric measurements. As a result of the study, the body mass index, waist circumference, fat ratio and age values of morning type participants were higher than those of intermediate and evening type participants. A significant relationship was found between chronotypes and age mean. There was no statistically significant relationship between chronotype and main meal, and snack. It was found that those who had a snack after dinner were mostly in the evening type participants. In conclusion, an individual's chronotype can lead to the development of obesity risk factors.
The evaluation of eating attitude and nutrition knowledge in the Turkish national active junior and senior judo team
This study was aimed to evaluate the eating attitude and nutrition knowledge of Turkish national active junior and senior judo team. 94 athletes participated in the study. By generating a data collection form, anthropometric features of the participants, and questions about their nutritional knowledge were collected. Their eating attitude and behavior were measured by the eating attitude test (EAT-40). As a result, is determined that consuming water and losing weight before the competition is statistically significant according to body mass index (BMI; p: 0.010; p < 0.01). The BMI of the athletes who consumed two or less liters of water per day was lower compared to the athletes with higher water consumption. Moreover, the athletes who lost weight before the competition had a lower BMI than the athletes who did not lose weight before the competition was observed. When the participants were evaluated in terms of their EAT-40 scores, it was determined that their nutritional knowledge status, the participants' daily meal skipping status, the water consumption, the weight loss before the competition, and the meal consumption before and after the competition was not significant. However, athletes need to get more scientific support to improve their nutritional, eating attitudes and to establish proper eating habits. Investigating of eating behaviour differences between university students according to their accommodation
This study was carried out to examine the differences in eating habits of university students according to their accommodation. This is a cross-sectional descriptive study with undergraduate students studying at Yeditepe University Kayışdağı campus. Within the scope of the study, data were collected from 370 undergraduate students. The form that questioned the demographic information created by the researcher and the Eating Behaviors Scale developed in 2013 by Yahya Özdoğan were used as data collection forms. All data obtained were analyzed with the NCSS (Number Cruncher Statistical System) statistics program. The confidence interval was determined as 95% in analyzes and the results were considered statistically significant for p<0.05. It was found that most of the students (47.8%) stayed at home with their families, most (71.6%) were at a normal weight, most of the students (53%) eating behaviour was good, and most (68.6%) thought that their eating behaviour has changed after starting university. Students who think the most that their eating behaviour has changed after starting university are who stay in the dormitory, and those who think the least are those who stay at home with their family. No significant relationship was found between students' eating behaviour and accommodation. However, it is seen that the group with the highest percentage of good and very good nutrition categories is those who stay at home with their family. It is thought that some of the reasons that lead to this result may be the good economic status of students, high level of consciousness, good opportunities for healthy nutrition in and around the school and being conscious nutrition and dietetics students among the participants.
Determining the influence of using social media on eating attitudes among university students
The present study aims to investigate the effects of social media applications, which we frequently use in our daily lives and become indispensable on the eating attitude of university students. The fact that young people use social media applications excessively in this critical period of their lives may cause health problems such as obesity, as well as negatively affect body perception and even affect their future health status. The thesis was planned as a cross-sectional descriptive study and conducted with 509 (346 women, 163 men) and mean age (21.5 ± 2.32) students who received undergraduate education at Yeditepe University Kayışdağı 26 August Campus and using social media. Young Internet Addiction Short Form was used to identify internet addiction. Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale used for identify social media addiction, Eating Attitude Test was used to determine irregular eating attitudes, and Body Mass Index (BMI) (kg / m2) was to determine obesity status. The data were collected online and in face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire. As a result of the study concluded that social media addiction differs according to age, gender, where the person lives, and frequency. It found that the sub-dimensions of Eating Attitude Test differed according to gender, BMI, the effect of social media on eating attitude, visuals encountered in social media, and application of the recipes seen in social media. BMI varied according to gender and EAT sub-factors. As a result, social media addiction can lead to the development of obesity risk factors and unhealthy nutritional attitudes.
