Aestheticism and identity information in Walter Pater's Marius The Epicurean

The novel of formation, or the Bildungsroman, is among the most popular types of fiction in Victorian England, especially with realists. Opposed to realism and representing one of the most powerful late-nineteenth-century avant-garde trends is aestheticism. Its initator, Walter Pater, is mostly known and widely acclaimed as the theoretician of this innovative aesthetic movement. In this respect Pater's novel Marius the Epicurean is written in accord with the Bildungsroman, but, distinguishably in the sense of its thematic and narrative elements, the text differs from both socially and morally concerned realistic novel of formation. Even if Marius have found no appropriate philosophy and ended prematurely his life, nevertheless he continuously investigate and prove distinctive philosophical systems objectifiying Pater's unique aesthetic doctrine. To Pater, carrying the spirit to the fleeting chain of impressionisms in a powerful way is the keystone for a succesful and productive life. The aim of the present thesis is to explain the literary importance of the novel, reveal its non-realistic pattern and show the ways in which Pater follows the tradition of the Bildungsroman while relating it to the philosophical and aesthetic issues in many aspects.

Identity and foreign policy: The U.S. perception of China

Social constructivism argues that in process of foreign policy making, as well as material factors and capabilities, ideational forces, and social structures such as identity and discourses constitute an important aspect and conceptualize material structures. Moreover, the identities of states, their subjective understandings, definitions of friends and foes are important. Therefore, based on the main research question of thesis "How has the United States constructed China as a direct threat to its hegemony after 2010 due to China's economic and political rise?", the main aim of this thesis is to find out the way in which the United States has perceived and constructed China as a direct threat due to China's rising global power in the post-2010 period. In this study, the Discourse-Historical Approach is applied to analysis of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's article issued in 2011 "America's Pacific Century" which announced the essentials of the Asia Pivot policy initiated to balance China together with the first speech of Donald Trump after the COVID-19 pandemic at the United Nations General Assembly in 2020. On that regard, the identity of China in 2011 and 2020 is analyzed with the Discourse-Historical Approach arguing that the changing balance of power affects the United States construction of China identity as threat. In this context, this thesis argues that the United States constructs Chinese identity as a direct threat in accordance with China's growing economic and political strength with using the Chinese threat construction in order to justify and legitimize its foreign policy choices.

Ekler kısmında çocuk dergilerinin kapak resimleri, Himaye-i Etfâl Cemiyeti'nin Çocuk Bayramı'nda satışa sunduğu pul ve rozet resimleri, Gürbüz Çocuk Müsabakası resimlerine yer verilmiştir. Anahtar Kelimler: Çocuk Bayramı, Millî Bayram, Tören, Millî Kimlik, Çocuk.

New culturalism and a critical analysis on post-colonial identity

This study primarily aimed to analyze post-colonialist seemingly polarized sides of the oppressor/oppressed from close perspectives and discussed related nested concepts with their own paradoxal conceptualizations. The first chapter of the research necessarily mentioned about the internalized areas of interior and exterior colonial discourses, additionally about their inclusive politics to see the space between what was cultural practice and what was colonial experience. The second chapter attempted to analyze schismatic tendencies based on ethnicity, race, language, social status and hybrid identities in colonial representations. The last chapter aimed to decode the colonial process focusing on sub-identities and power relations. Consequentially, it put forth the need of a new reading of identity labeled as `New-Culturalism? (my conceptualization). It doesn?t intent to legalize, label or deny the process of Western identity formation. It also doesn?t reflect a plain objectiveness; above all, it aims to be in the process of sense-making that will hopefully serve to humanity to what we are indebted.

Kurumsal kimlik oluşumunda kültürün etkisi; Arçelik'in kurum kimliği

Bajariler'in diğer kesimlerden nasıl farklı bir kültürel kimliğe sahip oldukları, yaşam sürdükleri tespit edildi. Çalışma niteliksel araştırma yöntemleri kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Kapsamlı literatür taraması, mülakat, gözlem tekniklerinden yararlanılmıştır. Bu doğrultuda İstanbul Cizreliler derneğinde 2017 tarihinde mülakat gerçekleştirilmiştir. 1-15 Temuz 2019 tarihlerinde Cizre'nin mahallelerinde 22 mülakat ve rastlantısal gözlem gerçekleştirilmiştir. Tüm bu veriler ele alınarak araştırma raporlandırılarak sonlandırılmıştır.

Memory and emotions in the identity construction: The Algerian descendants in Adana

This thesis examines the identity formation of Algerian descendants in Adana and Kozan based on the narratives of three different generations to understand how they define and give meaning to their identity and belonging in Turkey. The research aims to explain what it means to be Algerian descendants in Turkey and live between two cultures and analyze how diasporic identity formed. For this, I conducted 20 recorded interviews, attended different community gatherings, and engaged in participant observation. The study considers both individual and collective identity theories to investigate identity formation in a diaspora. The findings suggest that interlocutors' identity construction was influenced by nostalgia and collective memory transmitted through generations. Moreover, the interlocutors' emotional connection to Algeria led to creating a utopian nostalgic version of it through which they sustain their ethnic identity. Observation in the field suggests that Algerian descendants have solid emotional ties to the homeland through their religious affiliation, culture, symbols, and customs, but this belonging changes according to generation. The study shows that generations experienced different political contexts in Turkey regarding otherizing and discrimination of minorities, leading them to position and negotiate their identity strategically. Interlocutors also negotiate their belonging to Turkey through narratives, symbols, and "usable" memories that legitimize their presence. Thus, this research shows the emergence of a hybrid identity as a strategy of integration and belonging. It is also argued that hybrid identities emerge, nurture, and are negotiated in diasporic spaces. In this sense, this study contributes to the "third-space" (Bhabha 1994)conceptualization by exploring the diasporic space through memory and emotion repertoires. This research is the first to focus on the identity formation of Algerian descendants in Adana and Kozan; it contributes in that sense to the literature on Algerian diaspora identity but also to the contemporary Turkish and Algerian historiography. Keywords: Belonging, Hybridity, Identity, Memory, Nostalgia, Third-space.

The influence of international schools' Western culture on Egyptian Muslim student identity

This study examines the influence of the international education system on Egyptian Muslim student particularly in terms of their religious identity. Studying in international schools that provide English-medium education is an increasingly prevalent aspiration in Egypt in recent years. This study examines the relationship between the identity development process and such schools' Western culture. To be able to examine the question empirically, I have conducted fieldwork using in-depth interviews and participant observation. 31 participants were included in this study— parents, teachers, and students who were attending different international schools. The data I obtained indicates that identity dynamically interacts with education and culture. The subculture of international schools is found to be heavily influenced by Western culture. The limited exposure of students to their local culture, compared to the Westernized one they are exposed to at school, results in alienation from their local culture. Such alienation was found to hinder students' identity development process as well as the formation of their religious identity. In fact, as I demonstrate in this thesis, students struggle to maintain their local identity. The literature suggests that students' experience of excessive exposure to such schools' Western culture and use of English language significantly more than Arabic language, combined with limited exposure to Islamic education has led to a significant dysfunction in their religious identity formation process. Hence, their identity as Muslims is found to be unstable.

A comparative study of migrant muslim identity in London: Brick Lane by Monica Ali and White Teeth by Zadie Smith

ABSTRACT This thesis is an attempt to study migrant Muslim identities in London: Monica Ali's Brick Lane and Zadie Smith's White Teeth through the lens of Homi K. Bhabha's concepts of 'mimicry', and 'hybridity'. Both novels as a postcolonial literature exhibit cultural hybridity and mimicry, which represents the confused identity of first and second-generation migrant Muslim identities from British earlier colonies. Both novels discussed in this thesis are set in a different borough of London and the characters are migrant Muslims of South Asian diaspora. This study consists of four parts and the first part begins with the background to the authors, a brief explanation of several definitions of key terms and an introduction of theoretical terms, which are essential for analyses of migrant Muslim identities in London. Overall, all of the theory that is discussed in the second chapter is applied to both novels by Monica Ali and Zadie Smith. In the third chapter, it also focuses on multicultural Britain and immigration. It explores the differences between the generations of immigrant identity where they come from. The thesis also analyses how immigrants in both novels define their identity and interact with British identity and the dominant culture surrounding in a metropolitan city whether it changes or empowering their identity. Finally, the thesis deals the relevance of Homi K. Bhabha's perception to comprehend how the Muslim immigrants try to mimic and adopt the dominant British culture with a view to achieving social acknowledgment, but treated as others and inferiors in the society. This thesis will explore issues of migrant Muslim identity through the lenses of mimicry and hybridity that covers the cultural identity, conflict of identity between 'self' and 'other', 'British'-'Bangladeshi', clash of cultures, sense of alienation and ultimate disillusionment of the major characters prevail throughout both novels in the light of Postcolonial critical approaches.

Hybridity and identity crises in Randa Jarrar's a map of home and him, me, Muhammad Ali and Elif Shafak's honor and the Forty Rules of Love

In the many intellectual literary works; hybrid culture and individual identity have a primal role in the age of globalization, the process in which flow of ideas take place constitutes precepts of the global system. Hybridization comes out from the amalgamation of myriad heritance from various cultures of the world. In such a multi-dimensional direction, the crises of identity creeps in deeply. Therefore, the identity of individual springs from the individuals' feelings, aspirations, characters, and motives. These factors are held and practiced by an individual through his life in cultural oversight. This study puts forth and draws inferences from the logical debate between the prevalence of hybrid culture and crises of identity of an individual in the age of globalization in the post-colonial international regime. Post-colonialism reflects the residue of master rulers in colonies held previously. This situation emerged on way of the world after world war-II. The immigration took place at significant quantum which breached the cultural values and presented various impediments for new settlers in different regions of the world. The purpose of the study is to explore the opposing forces of hybrid cultures and identities of the individuals. This translocation often becomes harmonious, whereas on some occasions it creates new breaching points for the security of the individual identities for human beings. This thesis consists of the inferences drawn from two great novels as mentioned aforesaid. The experiences and hard realities of the lives of writers have been accounted for in this textual analysis. Keywords: Post-colonialism, Identity Crises, Hybridity, Home, Orientalism.

The present study focuses on the reflections on the narrative identity construction in Bernhard Schlink's work 'The Reader' and analyzes the life story of the protagonist and first-person narrator Michael Berg from this perspective. In the current social structure, the indicators and the basic conditions of a healthy identity formation are dwindling. Therefore, the process of identity formation is seen as a problematic area in the contemporary society. The identity problem is presented based on the literary text to point out the forms of identity's realization and how the methods of the identiy(s) are constructed. It is particularly noteworthy how these constructive aspects develop in the story and how the author creates the fictional characters to reflect the narrative in the story. In the consideration of this aspect, the approach concerning the 'narrative identity' and its construction on the basic basis is examined. This procedure is intended to indicate that the formation of identity is explicated as a real problem in the late modern era and that individuals are looking for new ways of constructing the identity. The conception and the aspect of the narrative identity is one of these construction methods in which subjects depict their identity in narrative and procedural terms in stories. The properties of narrativity are utilized in the analysis of the selected text corpus afterwords in order to emphasize that this form of construction is also used in the design of literary texts and visualizes the image of the characters present in the text.

The grotesque space: Grotesque bodies and identities in wonderlands

The concept of wonderland has dragged many down rabbit holes and through secret doors since dreams and imagination first sparkled due to their inclusion of diversity, transformation and endless possibilities. This thesis proposes that wonderlands are grotesque spaces that provide open spaces for the flow in bodies and identities due to these features, thusly leading to theliberation from and transgression of the boundaries, hegemonic powers and norms of the 'real-world.' Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, James Matthew Barrie's Peter and Wendy and Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book are analysed in the light of this claim to prove that the disruptive and transgressive effect of the grotesque spaces in these works challenge the social and political institutions, norms, decadence, and hypocrisyof theVictorian society in fin-de-siècle, as well as those of the contemporary era. In the first chapter, the background of the concept of the grotesque and theories of the grotesque body, as well as related theories of identity formation are presented in order to reveal the rejuvenating and transgressive effect of the grotesque. The second chapter relates the theories on the grotesque to theories on spatiality, and claims that wonderlands, as imagined literary worlds, are the ultimate examples for grotesque spaces with their active feature that alters the bodies and identities of the individuals they house, and their tendency towards multiples and hybridity. In the third chapter, three examples of wonderlands from fin-de-siècle literature are analysed to prove the disruptive effect of grotesque spaces on the norms and rules of 'real-world' places through their capacity to flex territories of places, identities and bodies. This thesis suggests that the power of the grotesque creates active and transformative spaces that embrace the multiplicity of identities, along with the transformation of bodies and places. Grotesque spacestransgressthe connotations ofand boundaries framed for bodies, identities andplacesby the norms of the 'real-world.' The selected novels are examined in relation to spatiality to prove how they disrupt and challenge their era, as well as to suggest that wonderlands will remain as timeless spaces for literature due to their support of diversity and multiplicity.

The state theatre in Turkish nation building: A content analysis on Turkish playscripts

Identity building is a project to rebuild the cultural heritage, history and the vision of the nation states. After the First World War, young Turkey starts a cultural change after the pioneering of the elites. This change has a vision of "Westernization" and nation building. The State Theater of Turkey is an institution for meeting these purposes founded during the period of transition to democracy; repealing one-party government which is not a sudden process. Therefore, it is possible to see the vision of nation building and the eagerness of Westernization in the repertory of the State Theater still. Yet the institution is used as a nation's showcase during the convergence to the West block after the Second World War. In this study, I cover the repertory of the State Theater from the foundation of the institution (1949) until the first military intervention (1960). I support the research by using discourse analysis at first section to analyze the context referring identity; referring the meaning rather than words. This study finds out that as expected the nation building process in Turkish Republic continues in the 1950s with a variety, rather than havin one-dimensional indoctrination of certain national identity.

Everyday interactions between local and refugee women in a Turkish town: Identity construction and negotiation

This doctoral project investigates the dynamics of everyday interaction between refugee and local women residing in a mid-size Turkish city. Focusing on social gatherings of local and Iraqi Turkmen refugee women in domestic spaces for one year, the linguistic ethnographic study undertaken in this project explores the dialogical processes through which these women construct and negotiate their stances and identity positions. Regular field observations were supplemented by a total of 70-hour of audio-recordings of spontaneous interactions in Turkish in informal social gatherings, interviews, and home visits. Findings reveal how these interactions were observed to be normative and stance-saturated, and the hegemonic nationalist, religious and patriarchal discourses were all-pervasive. They also show that while the Iraqi Turkmen women's efforts to capitalise on the shared identities resulted in the emergence of "brief moments of tight but temporary and ephemeral groupness" (Blommaert, 2017, p. 35), in the long run, their refugee identity overshadowed other identities which they claimed for themselves.

Exploring the influence of youtubers on adolescents identity construction: An interpretative phenomenological analysis

The present study investigated the influence of YouTubers on adolescents' identity construction as well as aiming at exploring what kind of interactions occur between YouTubers and adolescents. In this context, this study intended to understand the YouTubers' role in adolescents' lives in terms of mindset and daily practices. In this qualitative research, the data gathered from 10 adolescents, most of whom are living in Istanbul. The data was collected through interviews in order to get in-depth information about the identity experiences of adolescents. The results of the interviews were analyzed through the interpretative phenomenological analysis method. The results of the study revealed that YouTubers helped adolescents to become integrated into society by noticing the similar aspects of their identities such as feelings, thoughts, and beliefs. On the other hand, YouTubers have been found to assist adolescents to discover their individuality through their videos and comments of other viewers on these videos. Also, it has been observed that the exploration option and range of social interaction extended thanks to YouTubers. However, it has been revealed that adolescents sometimes overly identified themselves with YouTubers, imitate them and implement YouTubers' recommendation without questioning. Considering this fact, it has been observed that the awareness level of adolescents about how much they are affected by YouTubers is insufficient, so it is essential to empower adolescents' new media literacy. As a result, the practical implications for parents, counselors, and authorities are discussed.

Identity construction and negotiation among EFL learners: A case study

The aim of this study was to give an elaborate description of the relationship between L2 language learning and identity construction at the English Preparatory Program of a private university in Istanbul, Turkey. This instrumental multiple case study was based on the narrative accounts of five English Preparatory School students collected via interviews, classroom observations, audio recordings and learning diary entries during their English learning studies for over a year including online education during the COVID19 pandemic. The results of the data analysis show that the participants' construction of L2 learner identities during their language learning journey at the school/home was marked with instances consisting of multiple and dynamic negotiations and mediations of identities from past and present learning experiences. The participants' search for a community of practice both face-to-face and online, the fluid nature of their learner/user/speaker positionalities as L2 learners and speakers, their imagined identities before and after starting their L2 learning journey, and their L2 investments are discussed in detail. The results show how the study of L2 identity constructions during the language learning process has implications in the field of applied linguistics and English language teaching and learning in general. Based on the findings of this study, recommendations for further studies and practices in the field of English language teaching and learning are made.

Bunka Gaikō (Japan's cultural diplomacy): Re-constructing Japanese identity in France and Turkey (1952-1989)

Japan has evolved into a cultural nation in the aftermath of World War II owing to the promulgation of the Article 9 of the Constitution of Japan. Given its pacifist culture and emerging role as a responsible member of the global society, cultural diplomacy became the primary and immediate foreign policy instrument to reconstruct Japanese identity in international relations long before the theory of Soft Power emerged. The present research unveils Japan's identity reconstruction through cultural diplomacy as a rehabilitative and constructive foreign policy mechanism to heal its image as a peace-loving nation by comparing Japan's cultural diplomacy in France and Turkey between 1952 and 1989 comparatively to discern what kind of perception of Japan has emerged as a product of Japan's international cultural policies in both countries. Ultimately, the thesis reveals that Japan's cultural diplomacy in France has generated an intellectual ecosystem, whereas, in Turkey, the perception of Japan and Japanese culture remains underdeveloped due to the lack of an official culture house—inaugurated by the Government of Japan—which can constitute a legitimate institute or culture house to coordinate international cultural policies.
