Greece?s Macedonian policy in the 1990?s

Following the collapse of communism and the disintegration of communist Yugoslavia, arisen of the Rebublic of Macedonia as an independent state has been the major prepossessing subject of Greece. Greece?s attitude towards his neighbor which declared its independence and wants to be recognized with the name ?Republic of Macedonia?, has developed in an unprecedented level.This thesis is a modest attempt to understand the reasons and and the results of Greece?s policies towards the Republic of Macedonia and their reflections on Greece?s foreign policy and international relations. The relations between the two countries, have been discussed on the basis of a historical background and with a chronological manner since 1991 when the Republic of Macedonia declared its independence until today in the ligth of certain turning points. The crises between two parties in the warm period that was the first half of 1990s depending on the ?name dispute? , have led Greek political actors to review their policies in the following period. After two countries have frozen the ?vital? name dispute ?Interim Accord? as a temporary compromise, the tension significantly has been decreased in the period of Simitis and opportunities have been created to build cooperation networks. Despite devloped cooperations in many subjects, name issue which have been kept the first place of the agenda, since the last of 2008, has been begun a new warm period.Key Words1. Greece2.
