Abstract (EN)

Cinema is an art that narrates, transforms and reproduces the semantic world, production relations, political and cultural reflexes of the individual and society. It is also a cultural tool that presents representations of gender norms and enables the reproduction of these norms or can lead to their change. The most important constitutive element of narrative in cinema is the organization of time and space. Space, which usually describes a physical place, is also a structure that is formed and changed by social relations, and it also changes these relations. Unfolding the tense relationship between men and women in the context of gender, it is also very important in the creation of dramatic narrative in cinema. Based on this importance, the question of this study is whether and how cinema, which interacts with society, conveys gender norms through space. This study, which addresses the multidimensional structure of the interaction between women and space from a gender perspective, aims to reveal how gender roles are produced, represented or reinforced through cinematic spaces. The films Görümce (Kıvanç Baruönü, 2016), Eltilerin Savaşı (Onur Bilgetay, 2020), and Zengo (Şahan Gökbakar, Müge Manuş, 2020), which constitute the sample of this study and were selected by purposeful sampling among the popular films shot after 2010 due to their wide audience reach, were analyzed within the framework of sociological film criticism, taking into account Umberto Eco's semiotic approach to architecture. As a result of the analysis, it has been observed that in the selected films, spaces are at the center of the narrative in character creation and conflict formation, and are pointed out as the place where cultural patterns regarding women's representations are embodied.
