Abstract (EN)
Painkillers, a commonly used type of medication in society, can pose risks if used unconsciously due to their availability over-the-counter and various side effects. The aging and elderly population is more susceptible to these side effects and risks because of their chronic illnesses and concurrent use of multiple medications. This study aims to assess the knowledge and awareness levels regarding painkiller use among individuals over 50 years old who visited family health centers in the city center of Denizli. This descriptive study's population consists of individuals over 50 years old visiting family health centers in the Denizli city center. The sample size representing the population was calculated as 270 people. A 39-question survey form was used as the data collection tool. In our study, a total of 270 individuals registered with family health centers participated, of whom 54.8% (n=148) were female and 45.2% (n=122) were male. The average age of the individuals was found to be 59.97 ± 6.66 years. The frequency of painkiller use in our study was found to be highest at a few times per month, at a rate of 27.4%. The most preferred painkiller was paracetamol derivatives at 64.4%, and the most common reason for using painkillers was head and neck pain at 44.8%. The rates of reading the medication insert and checking the expiration date were found to be quite high in our study. While 64.4% of the participants made the decision to use painkillers by a doctor's prescription, the remaining participants stated they made this decision based on the advice of relatives, self-judgment, pharmacy recommendations, or media-internet sources. When asked what they do first when they experience pain, the majority of the participants responded, "I use medications available at home." Similarly, those who stored unused painkillers in the refrigerator at home were in the majority. More than half of the participants stated they were aware of the side effects, with the most commonly known side effects being stomach and kidney damage. A significant relationship was found between the participants' education level and the rate of recommending medication to others. In terms of income, the group with an income lower than their expenses had a significantly lower rate of checking the expiration date. In our study, individuals with chronic illnesses were more likely to know about the possibility of side effects, read the medication insert, and check the expiration date compared to those without chronic illnesses. The rate of those who stated they received information about side effects was 46.7%, with the majority stating they received this information from a doctor. Those who received information about side effects were significantly more aware that painkillers could cause stomach bleeding, ulcers, kidney damage, and interact with other medications. Family physicians should have adequate knowledge about painkillers, provide appropriate pain management, and frequently inform their patients about this issue. Education is essential for the rational use of many drugs, including painkillers. Educational programs should be organized for patients. In addition to family physicians, other healthcare providers, pharmacists, and media-internet channels should provide the necessary information, prevent the use of over-the-counter painkillers, and work to mitigate potential future risks.
